Morning Gents

Does anyone know if there any truly plug and play LED replacements for the H1's out there at the moment?

There are loads of options. What do you want to do?

There's a couple of great threads in the Chimp cage about the latest gen LED bulb replacements. The problem with the bulbs is accommodating the heatsinks although there are versions with chainmail type sinks that can be fanned out.

There is also the option of fitting lamp units - although I suspect you'll need to upgrade the bodywork to the later / larger size unit.

Searchy, searchy.

I remember that thread but what put me off waa the dip/main beam spread issue There was a grifter who did a bulb swap that looked quite good in his pics. Just wondering if anyone had got further down the road

I think Central TVR were looking into LEDs last summer as part of their Chim Mk3 faired headlight conversion.

The issue there was the positioning of the different LEDs on the bulb. Something that is unikely to be overcome [cheaply].

So using LED bulbs for dual purpose - ie H4 fitting with dipped and main beam - is either going to work for dipped or main but not both. Using LED bulbs for single purpose - ie H7 for either dipped or main beam - is a significant improvement over incandescent bulbs.

Alternatively, fit an LED headlamp unit like a Trucklite.

I also think you will find the MOT man unfriendly towards LED's fitted when it should be tungsten due to the poor beam pattern.

Not had an issue with mine - to date.

What did you fit, was it difficult? I can see the benefit with a Griff is that we don't have dual filaments so must be easier than a chim

ETA there was a guy a while back who did it with his Griff and posted photos of the result, the beam pattern looked similar to the standard fit out, was that you?

I've been looking into LED lights recently for my Griff. It seems best to upgrade to the 7" headlamp first. Then consider either a complete led headlamp with the corresponding dipped, main and sidelight function for approx £200 a pair or fit replacement bulbs for dipped and again for the pair of main beam lamps at the front number plate

Not as expensive as I said earlier. Not sure what the beam spread would be on main beam way back in the griff pods. On jaguar e types they eventually removed the fab light covers on the early cars to move the headlamp forward to enable a good headlight beam spread frown

Not me with the Griff.

I have the units Robxjcoupe fitted to Tamy but in black not chrome - genuine Jeep units. These have been fitted for about 5-years now.

I have fitted this type of bulb to Tamy's lower driving lights - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291771291058?_trksid=p20...

Personally, I think the set up is excellent and leagues ahead of any TVR factory set up.

I fitted these units to the Reserve and they have been moved over on to Wendy. Again, huge improvement in performance. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262743736654?_trksid=p20...

I have these to fit to Wendy's driving lights - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152175511144?_trksid=p20... The lamp unit needs a minor adjustment to accommodate the round shaft of the bulb. Jack Valiant has previously fitted them to the Gredge and is happy with improved performance / output.

As to how hard to fit? I found it a PoP. No harder than changing a bulb or fitting out.

So no issue having dipped and main beam on a griff set back and behind the headlamp covers? MOT man finds no fault so to speak.
Reason I ask is I want to delete the low down main beam lamps on my Griff if possible

I would be interested to see some piccys of the latest different options fitted
I'm planning on getting my car back on the road next year and the top priority
Will be to update the headlights because night driving in a griff is just not acceptable if you want to drive beyond 30mph hehe

I can’t comment on H4 LEDs but a few years ago I replaced my Griff 7" headlamps H4s with HIDs and both dip and main have the correct light pattern. The MOT man actually thought my HID lamp patterns are more accurate with better definition, more importantly I've never been flashed by oncoming traffic.

If I ever have to revisit my headlamps I would consider LED H4s as the light is better and they don’t have a slow start like HIDs
