Don't want to turn this thread into a Facebook haters heaven but what is it about it that brings out the retards in their droves?
Is it only stupid, lazy & illiterate people that use it or do the intelligent ones just not post?
I use it most days for various forums, some car related, others related to other interests & almost every forum on there I'm a member of is the same, bar the odd post.
I choose carefully the people I add so my friends are, in the main, intelligent & articulate, sadly the general user doesn't seem to be.

I think that the difference is that normal, stable people use it differently - as a social network. The idiots use it as an attention-seeking tool.
I almost never post anything on mine (photos or comments) but it's very useful for the messaging functions.
Totally agree with this. Also, I find it a very useful tool for monitoring crime etc in my immediate area which quite honestly you wouldn't be aware of otherwise !!I almost never post anything on mine (photos or comments) but it's very useful for the messaging functions.
I use it as a feed of stuff from people and companies that I'm interested in, and as a means of maintaining a line of contact with people I don't see often, but don't want to totally lose touch with, whose phone numbers or email addresses might change.
I unsubscribe pretty quickly from anyone who posts pics of their dinner, graphic descriptions of their baby's fecal exploits or endless validation seeking crap attempting to convey how much money they can spend frivolously without if affecting their security.

I rarely post anything on mine either. However, when it comes to friends, I add anyone. A Facebook friend is not the same as being friends in real life. To me being a Facebook friend means nothing. I don't think I have ever denied anyone. I am also very nosey and curious about other people's life's so I enjoy a good nosey at pictures etc.

7 Ways to be insufferable on Facebook, worth a read.
True. Also, 8: The "if you care you'll share this" type thing. Also really annoying ... 'tag w
kers'. You see an interesting article and a load of comments. You're interested to know what others' thoughts are on the subject, so you look at the comments only to discover that it's a bunch of cretins tagging other people to alert them to the article. If you want to alert someone to an article, share it via a private message. There's nothing more disappointing than hoping to get a broader view on a subject just to be greeted by a bunch of tag w
kers tag w
king.Edited by MitchT on Wednesday 14th December 13:55
Again, it's down to use. I post very little on there and especially avoid all of the "woe is me" or "look at my amazing life" status updates. Do use messenger a lot and find it a good repository for photos and sharing them - especially useful for my rugby friends
I am also quite aware of security so am locked down to friends only and always tried to avoid posting pics of the kids - bit different now that they are old enough for their own accounts. I also refuse friend requests from random attractive women that pop up occasionally
A lot of my rugby friends are from traditional mining villages and are staunchly socialist. I just block feeds from the left wing websites and don't enter into political debate. The one time that I did was actually a more right wing post, and it soon became apparent that the "never argue with an idiot" saying was completely true

As an early adopter of Facebook when it was first released in the UK, only those of us with .ac.uk web addresses could get on board, so it was only people aged about 18-24 which suited me fine, as I was 21 at the time.
But its changed rather a lot now, you only need to have a mobile number or email address and tick a box to say you are over 13!
As such, all the most naive, shallow and self-centered people suddenly had this platform which they could share with people of all ages (some of whom were, of course, shallow, naive and self-centered, but were all students).
In its bid to become the dominant media platform it therefore of course attracts people of all types on board, and those naive ones in particular, will click anything, share anything, type anything, in the vain belief that what they say matters, or will make some change, and there is no reasoning with them at all that what they are doing is wrong.
Plus of course, many others have realised the potential availability of hoovering up lots of people's publically accessible data to start spamming them a lot - all those "tag a mate" type posts simply serve to build that pages data profile so they sell it on for a small amount of money.

I joined years ago, when it was still new-ish, because... I don't know, I probably had a reason.
I added a few "friends" but never really used it properly. I log in once or twice a year now out of curiousity, and it's pretty horrific. How on Earth do people have 800 "friends"? I know some of these people and that figure is wrong by two orders of magnitude!
And the amount of posts with a picture of a little girl in hospital that say something like "Ellie has cancer and will die soon. Bill Gates is tracking this image and has agreed to give $1 for every share"... FFS these are people with degrees and they are actually sharing it... Do they believe it?????
I don't know why anyone still uses it.
On a side-note... Do chat-rooms still exist? That was how we got our social fill on the internet back in the day. Find a relevant chat-room and log in to 30 other people all talking crap vaguely related to the topic of the room. Find one like-minded person who agrees that the other 29 are idiots, add them on MSN Messenger - and you have a friend!
Does that happen any more?

I don't think so. MSN chatroom IIRC, I remember using them back in the early 2000s when they were limited to how many people could be on at one time, you had to join one with about 27-28 people in and hope you recognised someone else's username. Like "GAZ_FROM_WIGAN" I added a few "friends" but never really used it properly. I log in once or twice a year now out of curiousity, and it's pretty horrific. And of course the important question - ASL? Private chat request yeah?
However, in doing that, I am pleased to say I have now 1 Friend I am still in contact with 16+ years later and neither of us turned out to be dirty old men looking for kicks

You're posting on one, its just a bit bigger than the old days. Does that happen any more?
My advice: Have a facebook account, but dont "be" on facebook. I have a fake profile - a character from Aliens. I just use it to follow a few groups of interest to me (ie, local cycling clubs etc) and so that i can access things on facebook that you need a login for.
But, theres nothing about *me* on there, and virtually no way an employer or even just joe public could look for information about me on it. Also means i dont need to put up with hearing about other peoples tedious s
t.

Used it for all of about 6 months when it first came out. Realised it really wasn't for me ,and ever since have put up with people screwing up their faces, like you don't even warrant to walk the earth ,when they ask you if you are on Facethingy and you reply ..... no .
