OK, the wife wants a turntable for xmas ( I kid you not...!)
not looking to go silly;
I already have a MM phono interface.

It will be making use of my Active Linn Isobarik's;

I've been looking at the following;
Rega Planar 1
Nad C556
Pro-ject Elemental
Pro-ject Essential 3

opinions please !

The only current source for the Linn system is my MacBook - I have virtually no experience of vinyl!
TIA

I'm very happy with my Pro-ject Essential, I think mine is version 2. I opted for it over the Element as it has a dust cover.

Rega Planar 1 or RP1 - they have the best arm IMHO.

OK... so the RP1 seems to be the favourite; but why not the NAD?

it's 90% the same as the RP1 (as it's based upon it), but with extra 'tweaks' ?

And for £50 less...

anyone on here got a NAD ?

Not sure of your budget but I went for the Project Debut III SE. It was about £265 at the time but I'm sure I've seen them on Amazon for about £240. The guy in richer sounds said that the Rega RP1 was pretty good too.

A recommendation for the RP1 is a recommendation for the NAD given they are practically the same turntable.

I have a NAD branded Rega arm (RB250 I think) on my Technics SL150, and you wouldn't know the difference apart from the NAD badge.

Was in the same position as you and ended up with the Rega Planar 2. I'm sure the Planar1 is a fine turntable but the Planar 2 looks much nicer, with it's 'floating' glass platter and slightly nicer looking arm. As for sound it's fantastic, but I have no idea if it sounds better than the Planar 1.

I know Audio Technica make decent stuff, I have a pair of their M50X headphones which I'm happy with, but Jesus does that remind me of one of those Chinese Landwind X7 type scenarios...

Yes, it's a replica of the Technics SL1200, which Technics discontinued when they thought vinyl was dead (although they're recently resurrected it.)

The difference between the LP1200 and the Landwind X7 is that the Audio Technica is built to very high standards. It's more of a tribute than a copy. It weighs a friggin ton too!

Bear in mind how careful your wife is likely to be with the vinyl. My wife wanted a t/t to play her old vinyl on... and she's not known for her patience with gadgets or looking after her vinyl! So while I would normally have gone for the LP120, Project or RP/NAD, I ended up going for a Marantz TT5005. Well reviewed for what it is - but what it is is a fixed weight, automatic belt drive made out of plastic. Fairly light and may only last a couple of years but sounds surprisingly decent enough through my 25 year old Kenwood amp.

If I'd spent more than £129 and then told her the belt needed altering herself to play her singles, she would have looked at me like I was mad. biggrin Similarly, I didn't want to see how she handled a LP120 or RP... eek As it is, she's happy.

thanks for all the comments

plumped for the RP1 in the end;
the NAD has gone EOL, which is why they are being sold a bit cheep - not much stock around too;

All RP1's seem to be the same price - so I got one with free delivery plus a new LP of my choice (!) for the same price as all the shops were charging.

Lets see if it turns up in one piece...

Been an expensive day - my MacBook pro SSD decided to go tits up after 3 years of constant use - and you can't replace it...
So off to the Apple store I went, new Macbook pro purchased.
bugger...

So an accurate replica then.

That said looking at the prices of the re-issue SL1200s it seems my pair might now actually be worth their weight in gold...

I got my 18yo son a TT for his birthday. I spent a few minutes showing him all the controls, and we got is one and only album playing.

He then asked me what button you press to skip to the next track smile

You should have bought him one of these, then he could have used it like a CD player... spin

You could have the car one for in car entertainment, and the portable disc player I seem to remember from the 70's TV ads. Bit like a portable CD player but the record stuck out.
