Just heard the familiar Chinook noise flying overhead. Unusually though it was heading out of Edinburgh over the Pentlands. Twitter suggests it's on exercise from RAF Odiham but that's miles away! What's the range on a Chinook, and any ideas why it's over Edinburgh?

Odiham to Edinburgh is only ~300 miles. Range on a Chinook is about 1 000 miles I think?

"On exercise" normally means deployed from another base, certainly when I was at Odiham we did a couple of deployments out of the army barracks at Edinburgh. Do a couple of days there then fly home. Although no where is too far really a standard captain check could be a 12 hour sortie at 150kt pick up some fuel on the way and stop off at a few landing sites or throw in a night stop somewhere.

I live more or less directly between Odiham & Edinburgh and sometime between 7 & 8 last night I heard and saw a couple of Chinooks heading north. Wonder if it was the same one(s)?

Wondered what that was in Edinburgh last night - didn't sound like the regular keystone cops chopper - sadly couldn't see it from the flat.
