I've discovered the foam surround section on one of my mission 707 speakers has partly disintegrated. The reason this is only a problem on one speaker is that many years ago I blew a speaker and replaced it so the speakers are not the same age as each other. I've seen foam surround repair kits for the mission 707 on ebay but since I've never undertaken any work on speakers before I don't want to attempt the job and botch it beyond recovery. So, can anyone recommend a reputable speaker repairer who I can post my 707 speaker to for them to repair. Better still does anyone know of a source for New Old Stock Mission 707s or good secondhand ones.

Thanks

I thought this sounded familiar! I asked a similar question back in 2009 (linky) regarding Mission 700s and still haven't done anything with them. They are still in a box in the attic! I did do some phoning and asking around but decided the risk/outlay wasn't worth it when I could buy new good speakers for circa £300-500.

Just found an old email from Oct 2014 where I spoke with Paul at Wembley Speakers and he quoted £30 each + VAT. More details of how I got onto him here.

Wembley Loudspeaker did a good job of my old JBLs. They are in Shepherds Bush, not Wembley.

If you don't find someone who'll do it at a reasonable price, and decide to replace , it really is worth buying the repair kit and doing it yourself before doing so - after all, if botched , the only loss would be the cost of a repair kit.

My speakers started sounding awful a year or so ago. The foam surrounds had all but disintegrated so I rushed out and bought nice shiny new speakers . I still liked my old ones though so I bought the e-bay kit and had a go. Though it was time consuming (esp getting all the old glue off) it's really not a difficult job if you don't rush it. The repair worked fine and they sound as good as ever and I now use the new ones at the front and oldies at the rear.

There are a number of youtube vids which show you exactly how to carry out the repair

Also you can download an app. to your smart phone which helps ensure that the cones are centred the on reassembly - I used this and it worked fine for me

Kit - this one is Oz, I think mine was from USA

General tutorial - there are loads more on youtube

To align cone with smart phone tutorial - it is really important to do this

Tips

1 Spend time removing every bit of the old glue and old bits
2 Make sure glue dry on inner before starting outer. I left mine overnight bethween stages 1 and 2
3 Wait another day before you wire them up and try them out

Good luck (post results if you do it)
