Subway seem to be spreading far and wide, petrol stations to town centres. Hardly surprising given the cost of food but I have never seen a busy one and wonder how they make money.

Apart from the ones in petrol stations that don't seem to do as well i don't think I've ever seen a quiet one.

How do they make money?

Well, they are all franchised from the main Subway brand.

The store owner has to buy EVERYTHING they use from Subway HQ, so they end up paying over the odds for tomatoes, lettuce, meat, chairs, cutlery, gloves, ovens, cleaning supplies. Everything.

The franchisees pay quite a high start up fee but then, once they have bought everything from HQ, and paid the staff etc, the rest of the money is theirs to pocket.

My old boss was clearing £3k/week from his - but he didn't say how much he had to put in at the beginning.

I've seen them "quiet" but at peak times, the one in Horsham is generally busy with kids from the college and people out doing their shopping.

They make money by charging £5 for a sandwich that costs 50p to make! (numbers made up)

They make money from making up the price on each sandwich! I've never been in a subway and ended up paying whatever price is on the menu board. I think I've ordered exactly what it says but the price is never what is on the board!

In the right places they make a fortune. I know of 2 subway franchisee brother's with a thing for Lamborghini and Ferrari.

Horrid smelly places.

I understood that tomato and lettuce were the only things that they didn't have to buy. Very tight organisation.

Didn't the bloke from Evo with the mega-mile Lamborghini own a few Subways? Must be lots of money in it, but maybe I've remembered wrong. biggrin

Depends on where they are. I used to frequent one at a petrol station on a Saturday with colleagues, and that one was busy more often than not.

They make money from charging more for two 6" subs than one 12" and often refuse if you ask them to split a 12" into two different sandwiches.

Look at the amount of staff at a McDonald's and then do the same at a Subway.

Always laugh when they brand themselves "eat fresh" or whatever their slogan is...when their bread is stale reheated crap

I do use them sometimes as they are usually open near 24-7 and its handy to get a sandwich when the only other option would be a Mcdonalds or petrol station sandwich

They do seem to be spreading everywhere though, im suprised at how many are in my local town

Unless you have a really good city centre store you need 2 or 3 franchise's to make money. Nothing to stop you opening a branch next to another branch either Subway just want your money.

I not long started seeing a girl once and we went to subway to grab some food. She was quite the shy and innocent type. I asked if she wanted a 6 inch or 12inch and she replied with "I'll have a 6 inch please I can't handle 12 inches" I've never seen anyone go so red with embarrassment laugh

Our local Subway is in a petrol station and sits next to a site that employees approx 5000 people (AWE). At lunch, the queue can easily hit 30 people.

It still ticks over nicely away from lunch time and at weekends.

Ah, you must be very near to me. That's one of my local petrol stations too. As an aside, I wonder whether it would qualify as the most secure petrol station in the UK with a healthy throughput of armed cops!

The couple near me are always busy, my Wife loves them as a treat, but I have to do the ordering, she can't handle the 20 question Q&A if there's someone waiting behind her.

I quite like them, I like their Tuna Subs and I have fond memories of eating pizza subs on International Drive in Florida as a kid. Wouldn't touch them now though, I think they're 1500 calories a go or something.

The only thing I don't like - it's the epicentre of the "Can I get" world as far as I can tell, it's like nails down a blackboard to me.

As for the money, I think it helps to get in early, we (Cardiff) were very late to the party Subway-wise, I think the first was about 10 years ago, there's dozens now of course, but the first few were owned by two brothers (I wonder if they're the same as the poster above) who orignally shared a Golf Course and Resort type place, they quickly were making more money from the Subways (I was working in the Bank that funded the purchases at the time) although this was only gossip around the office.

Does it happen to have a Shell attached to it? If so I also know which one you mean as I live about 15 mins away.

Also they're mega busy at pub kicking out time. I'd much rather a subway than kebab.

I like Subway. Surely the ham and turkey one i have with all the salad and no cheese or mayo on wholemeal has got to be one of the healthier takeaway options.
