Not quite sure where to out this, so mods please move as appropriate

I do some unpaid adhoc driving for a local school, taking kids on days out etc. NO payment of any form is involved.

I've done a proper mini bus driving course and am insured and allowed to drive their mini bus.

The school's now saying if any of us approved drivers want to use the mini bus for our own purposes we can do so as long as we arrange our own insurance. When we drive for the school, they insure us full comp but if we drive for ourselves we have to provide full comp cover, it's a brand new vehicle. Checked with my car insurance and they say third party on a car only is included but mini bus not covered and they can't offer any ideas.

I want to take my 11 year old grandkids and ten friends on a day out over Xmas but can't find anyone to insure it a reasonable cost. Anybody got any suggestions please?

In all honesty I'd suggest that by the time you've found an insurer and paid the premium you may actually find it cheaper to rent a different bus from one of the self-hire places that include insurance.

If not, then try quotax.net - their website specifically mentions day insurance for minibuses

Welcome, let us know if you get it sorted, always useful to have a verdict on these things.

You are not allowed to insure the same vehicle twice, if it is stolen who pays?
Ask the school if you pay any additional premiums can you speak to their insurer/broker to get you and your use of the vehicle added, it's a lot cheaper and maybe free.
Yes you can insure the vehicle in these and other circumstances.

Firstly, it is going to be very expensive, could be £2000+ and there is a very limited marketplace. You will also have nil Bonus on this minibus but if you have an accident in the minibus then this will be information that you are required to disclose to your car insurers.

Secondly I think it is a real faff trying to arrange comp insurance on a vehicle that you dont own, I think that you need to show that you have an insurable interest in the vehicle, the bus itself not the third party liability, and again you have a very limited marketplace and dealing with companies that would prefer to say No.

If you really want to take a busload of children out for the day I would expect that the better option would be to use a rental company.

Edit, apologies to KDel, I typed the above before reading your earlier post which came to a very similar conclusion.

Just a quick update for those who may be interested.

Spoke to half a dozen specialist companies including Quotax and they all say no can do. As someone else said we'd end up with the m/b insured twice.

Spoke to the Local Education Authority and their insurer and they too say no. Additionally the LEA won't let the m/b be used for anything other than school business. The Head's a bit pissed off about that though 'cos the leasing company put it in his mind to rent it out at weekends and holidays rather than have it sitting there costing money and offsetting the costs. He called the leasing company on it and they deny ever having said that and mysteriously can't find the tape of the phone call.

So unless one of you geniuses can come up with an idea, we're scuppered.

I was surprised when you said that the LEA was suggesting that it could be used for non-school use.

cjs racing.

Sounds like the lease company had the head teacher over like a kipper.

It's a shame it can't be done, with how cash strapped most schools are.
