?? best tyres with maximum grip for a Wedge
Discussion
Hi Guys
Just wondering what's your views on the best tyre for a Wedge (maximum grip.......). I am running Toyo T1Rs at the moment and they are ok-good "all rounders" in the wet and dry but has anyone out there found amazing grip with other tyres, as the old 5 litre Wedge could certainly do with a bit of extra grip. Also I see that the T1R seems to have now been replaced with the ? T1S tyre.
Cheers
Lloyd

Still on a Toyo, older tyre but low milage and kept out the sun but good condition, (not a new one so probably an older version), stiffer sidewall than the Bridgstone it replaced. Used to be Bridgstone as a superb sticky even in the wet, not sure what they have on offer at the moment but tried a cheaper brand once and will never do that again. Forget the name. They crop up as suggestions every now and then.
I've need looking for front 225/50/15's but there isn't much around now in that size.
I can across Nankang TOURSPORT XR611, anyone tried these? I've hears mixes reviews of Nankang's.
oh - just found this - maybe not then...
Given 27% (breakdown) while driving a Volvo 240 estate (225/45 R17) on mostly town for 5,000 spirited miles
I reckon they're pretty terrible tyres.
I've got a Pirelli P6 on one side, and one of these Nankangs on the other, I bought the car like this. The tyre had 50% tread and is a 2010 make.
Hard braking, the Nangkang will lock up, creating an oversteer situation.
It is worse than the other 3 tyres on the car by a significant amount.
Wet grip is non existent, always spins.
It's a volvo 240 with 100HP but has no worries hitting 160 on the speedo with this nasty tyre.
Good for burnouts.

We had 4 new Toyo's put on our 4.6 earlier in the week running at 22psi , spent this afternoon hooning around the dirty damp roads of Dorset, and returned home with clean pants. I have nothing to compare them with. The tyres they replaced were 15yr old, rock hard Goodyear Eagles. The Toyo's just feel right on the wedge.
The T1Rs are among the most shocking tyres I've ever used. Even in the dry I can get the back end breaking away on roundabout exits, in the wet, Jesus H. Christ
Before them I used Eurotour 408s, a budget tyre that stuck better, squirmed less and was quieter than the T1R. I only went for the Toyos after so many people on here claimed they were great. Won't be doing that again
On rough surfaces the feel of the T1R is almost like Braille reading, you can feel every bloody lump and ripple.

R1R sound interesting but the widest they do in a 15" is 205.
I wonder if the grip being so much improved, whether they would be better than 225's (of anything else) on the front?
Plus with the narrower width it might be better in the wet than a 225 - higher pressure on the road contact patch.
One other thing I noticed was the R1R has not much width accommodation - 6.5J only +/- nowt. Have emailed Toyo to clarify.

Trackday tyres tend to be quite generous in their sizing.
I have 195/55 15-inch Nankang NS-2R fitted to Wendy that were previously fitted to the Reserve. Same model but 205/50 16-inch fitted to Tamy. Both sets are the hard compound so opting for the soft compound would offer more grip.
Also very happy with the Uniroyal Rainsport 3.
Both tyres offer plenty of grip. Driver training would be the next step.

I've clipped the wrong bit of your post but with reference to narrower tyres on the front, I felt the turn-in improved on the 390 when I had 215s (Vredesteins IIRC) on the front - briefly, before the rear 225/60s rubbed the arches a bit too much so I swapped the whole set... for the sh!tty Toyos.Hi Adam
Yes I might have to have a "wee think" re tyre options now. I bought these wheels some years ago from Campbell (420 SEAC) when I had the old 350i-they are not 16" but they just look wider to me than most other 400se TVRs wheels ? 8 or 8.5 x15" in which case R1Rs not an option for me ? any thoughts guys-do these wheels look wider than stock rims......
Cheers
