Had a new Hydrid to try for a couple of hours which I liked. Have to say in stop start traffic on a blocked M11 it was brilliant.
It only had 4 miles in the batteries when I collected so set it on E charge to top up. On mixed driving topping up this returned 18.6 mpg. I then used up 9 miles of charge before engine kicked in again and when I returned it had averaged 24.5 mpg.
I need to assess my journey profile but if doing lots of local round trips from full charge at home the engine my rarely start, obviously on longer round trips of say 200 miles without pinching some "free" charge at the destination the engine would do most of the work and a 3lt petrol is not going to be as good as a diesel on these occasions.
Anyone got any real world figures with a mixed driving pattern? Current 4.8 S is returning 16-17 mpg at best but makes a nice noise!

I've had mine for over two years and in that time it has averaged approx 30mpg, roughly the same as my previous Cayenne V8 diesel s.Mine does a mixture of driving and about half goes on a 200mile round trip to Cardiff. The trick to maximise economy is counter intuitive to start off until you adapt a new driving strategy. This involves avoiding exceeding about 0.5g braking effort to allow the e brake to charge the batteries and not waste it in heating brake discs, also there is no engine braking so take your foot off the gas pedal every chance you get to allow the momemtum of 2350kg to carry you forward.Strangely the harder you drive in sport mode the quicker the batteries top up so it does not make much difference to the overall economy in a long journey if you drive it like you just robbed a bank or driving like Miss Daisy!.
I avoid e-charge like the plague as it guzzles fuel in this mode and always run the batteries empty before returning home and charge at home as often i can.Its bombastic when driven in sport mode at full pelt by the way and 0% road tax.

Very similar to my own experience.

Thanks, that's encouraging, v8 diesel would be my other choice from my S petrol, I have bulk derv tank at home too.
Just been to town for dinner, 7.5 miles each way, one journey from totally cold, probably used a gallon of petrol, hybrid engine would not have needed to start.
2 questions,
Any thoughts on lecky cost to charge fully.
What about cabin heating, is that electric?

Well basically you only have a 10.8Kw battery pack to top up and the car always keep 20% in reserve anyway,so when you plug-in to charge you're only putting in approx 9Kw at whatever rate you're paying.I'm lucky because i have 40Kw of roof mounted solar panels so i charge in daytime so it only costs me what i lose in export rariff income which is 5p/Kw x 9=45p for a full charge or to put it another way 3p/mile based on a 15mile range.
My Cayenne does not have the optional auxillary heating option so mine heats up as a normal car.If you like jumping into a pre warmed car i'd tick the electric heating option despite being expensive.I'm getting a new style Panamera Hybrid next spring which has this option as standard plus a 14 Kw battery pack which i'm looking forward to enormously!.

I've done 6,000 miles in mine and have averaged 40mpg over that time. I use the e-charge on a long drive if I am going to drive around in the town/city I arrive in. I try to use the battery as much as possible for urban driving. We have quite a few charging points in EK and Glasgow so can generally charge up when out. It's a great car.

Or, you could save yourself 12 grand, alot of faffing around, get 35mpg without really trying, and buy the 200kg lighter and sweeter handling V6 diesel.

410bhp v 258bhp
0-62 5.9secs v 7.3secs
151mph v 137mph

Plus the extra 5mpg.

Have you ever put the e-hybrid in sport plus mode with a full battery and just floored it? Quite a sensation.

Personally, I don't mind the 12 grand and a little faffing around but each to their own.

I'm sure it is, but how many times a day do you get to do that before you have to burn petrol to top up the, now flat, pallet of batteries you're carting around?

Not even every day. I don't have sex with super models every day either, doesn't mean I wouldn't want to be able to if I had the chance, even if it meant putting up with some minor inconvenience the rest of the time.

Luckily I have a nice weekend car for that.

Since I'm not far from work, most of my driving during the week is on plug-in charge - love to see those mpg numbers climb.

You should add that "nice weekend car" to your garage then. It just shows an Aston laughlaughlaugh

Oh I meant the Mini. The Aston is for actual driving - not just riding or posing in smile
