I heard on the radio this morning this chap got caught on the M25 with a laser gun, clocked at 173!! Apparently he just got off on a technicality. Anyone know more?

Was in the paper. Master Magician Nick Freeman had the case thrown out. 173mph; fastest speed ever for a motorist.

Procedural failure(s) apparently. (1) They stopped the vehicle and ID'd the driver but didn't mention the IDing in court (it was in a notebook that the defence had seen). (2) They lost sight of the vehicle during the chase, so couldn't "beyond reasonable doubt" say the the vehicle they stopped was the one they clocked at that speed.

Itused to be the case in Arizona that if you could get away from the Highway Patrol who were mounted on Indians (no sniggering in the back!) you were in the clear even if they got your number. They hated going to court and admitting that there was anything quicker than their bikes - Streaky

Excellent - my hearty congratulations to the driver - he's a damned lucky fellow! I love it when records get stretched like this.

Jcn 26 to 28? plus numerous other little straights. You'd be surprised how quickly these cars go from 90 to 170+mph (and braking too).

I remember this little scene from some time ago.

Passenger: You really get a sense of being pushed from behind in these, dont you?

Driver: You will do in a minute

Middle of the night, no other traffic about, Dartford to Jct 6. for example - good for at least occasional sustained bursts up to 150 MPH. Probably a fair bit more in a 911T. So I'm told.

I think that at least some of the US, it may still be the case, (and correct me if I'm wrong), that if they don't actually stop you it follows that they do not Know for sure who was driving and since you cannot be forced to incriminate yourself, due to the 5th amendment, they have no case against the driver.

Pretty much most of it, considering a 996tt can get to nigh on 190 in under two miles at VMAX events.

from Mail today.

Brigitte Choudry from Roadpeace spouted forth ' Driving at 173mph is totally reckless. This man had no consideration for the safety of himself or others, it is a 'miracle' no one was injured or killed.'

An event that appears inexplicable by the laws of nature and so is held to be supernatural in origin or an act of God.

.... why do the papers give these people space ??

Well to her of course 'Speed Kills' so the fact that no one died when someone did 173, it must be some sort of miracle

You can almost hear her when she gets off a plane "phew that was a lucky one, we were doing 500mph and nobody died"
