You really need to know the cel codes to be sure, coil packs, plugs, maf, lots of possiblities. when mine had this problem a misfire was also noticed. Coil packs were in a shocking state so I replaced the lot that Sorted it.

might be in the exhaust department. (O2 sensors or failing cats, usually early sign with dodgy misfires then check engine light)

Hi Tom, sorry to read this. There was something in the history, iirc, about the car having had new coil packs at some stage in the past, but not sure if it was all of them or not. If you have a look at the paperwork from Chris Denning in the history, that may shed some light. All the best, hope you get it sorted without too much trouble. Cheers, Andy.

Just to add, when it's fixed, will you post up what the problem was? I have another now, same vintage, 20k more miles than yours when you bought it. Cheers, Andy.

Didn't even cross my mind it might be that, glad it wasn't too tragic, all the best with it.
