Newer shape beetle buying guide
Discussion
Hi All,
The gf's Peugeot 206 has gone bang tonight so we're after another car!
She's keen to get a VW Beetle!
I've been trying to find a buyers guide online but can't find anything.
Anyone got a link to a buyers guide?
Or any tips of what to look out for?
She does a lot of miles. Being VW's I trust they're fairly reliable?
A diesel would be preferable but we could go for a 1.6l petrol or smaller...
Budget around £3k max really. Perhaps a bit more. Dunno what sort of example this would buy us?
Thanks

£3k should buy a 2007/ 2008 facelift version and as above it's just a Mk4 Golf underneath. The 1.9 TDI diesel is a bit rough and unrefined but a reliable unit capable of returning decent economy. I would avoid the 1.4/ 1.6 petrols as they are a bit underpowered and from the era where the cambelts used to be prone to failure.
Personally I would say that money is better spent elsewhere as the Mk4 Golf platform is now very dated and nearing 2 decades old. You'd be better with a late Golf Mk5 or early Mk6 if she's set on a VW, or if not perhaps an R56 (2006 onwards) BMW MINI. The Fiat 500 could be worth a look too.

It's actually a totally differnet car from a Golf; it only shares some of the running gear. The body shell on the Beetle is far stronger than the Golf and feels like a big go kart to drive; Absolutely rock solid and very comfortable. The wife has a 2 litre. It's now 14 years old and is still immaculate and absolutely rust free. This is the best engine for these cars and it pulls like a train. The diesels horrible; noisy, smelly and expensive to repair if it goes wrong. I just did a major service on the wife's for the MOT. The timing belt kit was £28, and it took me all of 2 hours to fit.
A great motor and miore people admire it than my Audi!!
