Hi, Im planning to get back at my 280i project that I've had sitting around for some time now. I am looking to upgrade the front bakes to some larger disk and 4 piston calipers. What is available for kits for these cars???
Thank you
Mike

In ascending order, the usual progress is:

Vented discs and calipers from a 2.8 Granada estate (not 4-pot but still better)

Granada vented discs and AP calipers from an Austin Princess

Wilwoood or similar spendy option - it's only a 280i.

Expect all the suspension bushes to sh!t themselves if you beef up the brakes.

I recently refurbished the larger twin pot Granada 2.8 estate calipers on my 390 and fitted new vented discs and Green stuff pads and the brakes are now superb compared to the original standard 350i brakes. I did upgrade the 350 with hyspec 4 pot full kit at almost 900 quid and although they are truly awesome if it were my money I'd go for the larger calipers and vented discs. I hear the Princess 4 pots can be bloody ackward to bleed.

Hi Mike

I have noticed a difference with the original caliper with a spacer between them in order to accept a vented disc on my 350i....(Same caliper)

You don't really need massive brakes unless you are racing...If your master cylinder...Calipers, Disc's and pads are in good order and the fluid has been changed then these should be adequate...Obviously compared to a modern car they feel shyte but its a 30 year old car and shouldn't be driven like modern car.

I had the Austin Princess set up on my 280i mainly because I raised the bhp from 135 to 207...There is a company who have started re-making them.....I will post it up when i find it....smile

These would still need a spacer kit to take the wider 24mm disc.

Another vote for the Granada 2.8 Estate calipers plus vented discs. Work pretty well on my 350i, way better than the originals and not silly money.

Yep, MTEC025 vented discs. The new larger calipers to suit are also relatively cheap. I got a new one from Brakeparts

http://brakeparts.co.uk/#!/shop/FORD/GRANADA/77-85...

BCA0852 for nearside and BCA0853 for offside £56 exchange.

I used DP2296 Greenstuff brake pads. They are superb but need plenty of anti-squeal grease on the back!
