Like most people this weekend I have the covers of the car and getting ready for the summer fun time.

But on try to pull out of the garage I found that the brakes have become stuck on the one of the front wheels. Having moved the car back and forwards to try and free it off it is still stuck.

Any ideas ?

Also I have some minor rust on the disks should this be removed first or will it come off during initial braking. I don't want to mess the pads up by driving with them covered in rust deposits.

Any help with the above would be grateful

Surface rust on the discs will clear itself off within a couple of minutes of normal driving.

If the brakes are only binding slightly, take it round the block and jump on the brakes a few times. If they're really stiff it'd be worth taking the wheel off to see what's up, probably just the pads sticking in the runner or the sliders need greasing (if you have a sliding caliper).

This is a common problem - unless you absolutely have to (ie: you live in San Francisco!), never leave the handbrake on, expecially after washing (lock in gear instead).

I'd rock the car using a fair amount of engine power - eventually the stuck wheel frees itself - be aware that at the point of freedom you'll shoot forwards or backward fast so be ready to brake!

When you free it, it'll sound really awful from inside the car but I have suffered no damage doing this.

Regarding the resudue, this will go after a run - use the brakes gently to begin with.

Good luck!

Hmm ... I live in SF. Guess I don't have that option!

I tried the trick of rocking bake and forward but as the car is on a shingle drive I didn't get any grip on the stones.Managed to free the brakes with VERY gentle taps on the disk and assembly with a wooden mallet.

Went for a run and now have nice shiny disks again. Glad that the residues of rust doesn't harm the pads or the braking performance.

Thanks for the help.

That's a novel way of doing it! I'll remember that.
