Im rarely sick and im feeling guilty, my cold has got really heavy and i now have a chesty cough aswell, its an absolute nightmare when someone rings in sick in my job as they have to try and find cover, but i dont think its going to be a wise idea me going in, spreading my germs and trying to get through a 12 hour day with a 2 hour drive home after.

How bad do you need to be before you ring in sick?

Your colleagues will thank you for not going in and spreading your germs.

It should be no concern of yours that ''it's a nightmare to get cover in my job'' and it should have no baring whatsoever on whether you ring in sick or not .... if your employer chooses to run their staff levels with no accommodation in their system for covering genuine sick leave that's their decision and they have to deal with the consequences of their staffing policy.

being self employed I can't ring in sick. I went in when I have the 'hits, and basically went to the toilet ever 30 minutes, made it thou, 10 hours on a night shift, and no germs spread to anyone else, probably the worst experience I have had for a while.

This is a fair point, i wouldent feel so bad as im never off ill, but i know i need to use a sick day soon for a job interview (no other way to get the day off) so ill be leaving them in the st twice

Has to be pretty serious for me to ring in.

Last time I thought I had a chill but collapsed and was taken to the ED and it turned out it was viral meningitis and ended up off for 3mths and having a minor urological op

Last time I was off, it was shingles.

Think I've had about 3 off days since 1999.

run a business so cant ring in sick,

might be able to swing the wife taking over day to day management if I was to die but she'd expect my corpse in the office the day after

I've never worked anywhere where this happens. IME comments range from "tsk, was he out again last night?" to "half term - what a surprise".

I rarely have time off sick, I generally don't get ill, the last time was earlier on this year when I had some weird bug thing doing the rounds; sickness and diarrhea, it was awful and I don't ever recall having anything similar before, I actually was ill on my day off but I took the following day off to recover as I was just so exhausted and weak.

Prior to the above, my last day off sick was probably 3 years ago, maybe longer, I've gone in with coughs and headaches and generally feeling rough but like most sickness you tend to be worse in the morning, by mid morning you feel alot better.

Regarding someone mentioning your colleagues appreciating you not going in if ill, it couldn't be further from the truth when it comes to higher management at my place, it is really frowned upon, my immediate manager tends to pick up things and has been in when really he shouldn't but the grief he would get from higher management just doesnt make it worth it.

Needing time off for an interview or when my son was poorly all night and I was supposed to drive from Reading to Chester for a meeting, so I pretended to the poorly one.

Rarely sick, last time was my 40th birthday, which fell on a bank holiday weekend so I was well again for the Tuesday but ruined my 'surprise' party.

Been with this company 15 years, they have a productivity bonus (in Leiu of previous yearly pay rises) whereby you lose 1/2 your quarterly bonus if you take a days' sick. (Usually equates to about £800 before tax). I've had 1 day off in that time when I foolishly got arc-eye welding one of my cars one evening - basically could hardly see the next day.
Recently a colleague of mine fell off his motorbike at 70mph,his head hit the deck and was diagnosed with concussion. Resulted in him being forced to take a week annual leave followed by a fortnight light duties in the head office to protect his bonus. Don't talk to me about modern companies and their compassionate working conditions !

Earlier this year, I picked up what I thought was a minor cold. So I continued attending work (I'm home and field based, so minimal risk of passing on to others).

I did this for a few weeks, until I got really bad one weekend - ended up with the wife taking me to the out of hours GP at our local A&E dept., where they kept me in overnight for observations and chest x-rays. Turned out I had a really nasty chest infection that I'd been ignoring. Combined with my heart condition, it could have been very serious.

I haven't phoned in sick for nearly 40 years. I always make it into work, then go home sick. Since the age of 20, I've averaged less than one day of sickness per year. In my current job I went 5 years without taking a single sick day.

For some reason I tend to get sick on my days off.

Haha ... no messing about here lol

Never understood the volume of people who ring in with a sniffle and then wonder why they get sacked for multiple repeat short term absence

I've just had exactly this. Picked up a cold which knocked me sideways rather more than expected and so I was off Monday and Tuesday. Still feeling rough but was back in yesterday. If I'm honest, yesterday took it out of me more than I thought it would and all I want to do right now is sleep.

Very rare that I'm off sick, I don't get sick pay so I need to be really unwell before phoning in. These two days were my first days off ill this year.

Sorry if posted already but would it not make a huge difference on what work you do. if you work in care such ass me taking in D&V is not a good idea and 48/72 hours depending on the symptoms.
