I currently have the standard hose and filter from the front air dam, with the ACT smooth bore elbow from AFM to plenum.
Is there much to gain by replacing the rest of the OE with smooth bore too? It's around £135 for the hose kit.

What's the consensus these days?

Cheers

I thought it would make a difference, so did my car last year, plus a K&N filter.
I read somewhere about a month ago that back to back rolling road tests showed that it made no power difference whatsoever - presumably the inlet manifold and heads were more of a restriction than the elephant trunk.

Worth the cash just to get rid of the vacuum cleaner hose!

Benefits so small that you'll never notice.

Good to replace as part of more upgrades, trumpets, elbow, 72mm plenum etc.

I think the main benefits are smoother air flow upto the plenum and more importantly heat resistance and I'm confident mine gets cool air into the plenum even when engine bay is very hot. I ordered a slightly longer one piece length of heat resistant tubing to go over the top which reaches the elbow corner which is also a good barrier to the heat.

I think the best thing you can do to the AFM feed hose is insulate it so that it doesn't pick up radiant heat from the header. I'm planning to fit one of these this winter

Exactly.
The thickness of the rubber tube also helps but I think this is the real reason for cooler air. smile

The ACT kit doesn't squish flat at max rpm like the original spiral wound tat is prone to do when it's getting on a bit. And it looks better cool

This works, plus I added a thermal plate to the equation to keep the plenum cooler. Car doesn't have any more obvious BHP but drives so much better and I have no shunting at all any more thumbup

It's perfectly possible to run those lengths from generic silicone and aluminium components off a well known auction site; maybe not quite as neatly and tightly packaged as the pre-formed ACT kit achieves.

I can certainly vouch for the fact the ACT material is tough and durable, even when used for FI pressures and temperatures it was never intended for... just comes down to cost v convenience and it is very well designed/formed so rightly recommended if you want to sort that aspect permanently...

I must admit that when I stripped down my ACT smooth bore air intake system I was a little surprised at how much the sweeping bend (about 135 degrees I think) was compressed, however that may have been down to the fitting by a previous owner. Whilst I agree with Pupp the material quality is fine and pretty robust, I decided to be true to form and change it all out for solid (shiny) tube in various bends & straights from ASH (Auto Silicone Hoses) I believe I used predominantly 90mm diameter sections coupled with silicon joiner sections (see photos) and with some faffing managed to fit right through to the air filter.

I am unsure of the final benefit but am sure that the fact that the 90mm bore is unaffected by any compression or collapse will only help getting as much air as possible from a single standard air filter to my supercharger. The only exception to this is that the last section of solid tube to the secondary plenum arrangement had to be dropped to 72mm to fit past the supercharger itself.

If you are considering this as an option, beware it is a faff, it will involve some trimming out of the original inner wing access hole and a fair bit of offering up, trimming, offering up, re-trimming etc. of the solid alloy tube.

Not sure individually Alun, I got them from SC Power as part of the package but I believe they do sell them separately. Merry Christmas mate!

I ordered the ACT ones in the end. I can't actually find the long hose from the AFM anyway wobble

Changing anything is "fun" but at least it keeps me occupied. I get in trouble if I've got a few quid in my pocket and a laptop for a couple of hours!! Better off in the garage messing about smile
