a bit of christmas sillyness.

I was watching britain's strongest man yesterday and seeing the size and strength of those guys (winner was eddie hall - 28 st, 6'3" freakishly strong (obviously) to boot) made me idly consider who'd win between him and a silverback - typically same weight and 5'6"

eddie hall would be many multiples stronger than the average human male so strength would presumably be similar IMO

feel free to add your own "who'd win's" biggrin

The silverback would rip his arms off and beat him with them, they are about as strong as 10 men.

that's my point, so is he....
i did some basic googling and the assumptions about a gorillas strength are just that, wildly ranging from 'not much stronger than a human
due to not significantly more muscle bulk, through to 27 times stronger. there has never been a test!

Gorillas and monkeys have higher muscle density than humans so Stig wouldn't stand a chance.

Honey badger would take them both on at the same time with one paw tied behind it's back.

That guy is a beast no doubt... but the Gorilla, assuming we're talking a full on wild, in his prime male - I think would have it. Vicious as anything and with canine type teeth.

I'd like to see someone like Eddie against Mike Tyson in his prime.

I once read an interview with Glenn Ross in which he claimed he could have taken (a then at the top of his game) Lennox Lewis.

The Silverback.

Couple of reasons

1) We have evolved to have finer muscle control at the expense of brute strength (both in neurological as well as physical attachment).
2) The silverback has proportionately more upper body muscle and hence strength.

When you first said Silverback I thought you were going to say Tony 'Silverback' O'Shea the darts player

On that basis I'd have said Eddie Hall would probably just get the nod biggrin

As you're talking about a proper gorilla then as above it would rip Eddies limbs off before he could say Deadlift

Massively strong but he was never in what you could call good shape. Unless he sat on Lewis he'd get his head kicked in.

I've got so much to do! Why am I thinking about this? It's such a ridiculous hypothetical so....

Surely intelligence should be an advantage? Even in a 1 on 1, with nothing else to hand, the human should be able to outsmart/trick the monkey.

What about the 2 legs thing. Part of the reason the gorilla has so much upper body is because he's mostly on all fours. Surely, he would be at a disadvantage if forced onto his hind legs.

Combining the 2, could the human figure out a way of using a standing height advantage?

What about some fight training for the human? surely the monkey will just be using savage instinctive attacks.

A chimp would beat that guy, let alone a Silverback, never mess with a monkey.

In a pie eating contest maybe. What boxing experience has Ross got? He'd have been destroyed.

The gorilla and especially the chimp would be more vicious, ferocious and a lot quicker and still stronger. The weightlifter would be ponderous in comparison - no contest it would be over in seconds

(And they're apes not monkeys biggrin )

I saw a documentary once, set in the time the statue of liberty was uncovered, chimps and gorillas are much smarter than you think and can hunt and capture humans, just because when you see them they are flicking their pooh it doesn't mean they aren't clever.

Tend to agree, but his reasoning is that he could take a couple of punches to get a hold of Lewis.. not sure, but there are some interesting tales about Ross' exploits, including him getting the better of an IRA punishment gang sent with baseball bats to give him a beating.

Chimps and gorillas are great apes like us, along with Bonobos and Orang-utans.
