Just driven from Newcastle to Stroud in an Eclass 220. Stopped at Junction 28 and read the paper criticising Merc on mpg. Checked computer on arrival and 52.3mpg. Car full and 70mph all the way in total comfort,. I have no complaint at all.
I got the same economy from my E350 on a 250 mile journey last week, I wasn't in a hurry so it was a leisurely drive, but even so >50mpg was impressive. According to the trip computer, average mpg over 2 years ownership is 41mpg, pretty good for a 3 litre V6. Well its true, Mercedes do have the worst fuel consumption... lol..

Mine over last two years 21.5 but I do like to use the loud pedal a bit
Splendid work. So my big prehistoric V8 is doing about the same as the modern 4 cylinder.
(Accepting that I frankly wouldn't see which way you went)
I used to have a 2.8 W124. Excellent car for the long journeys I frequently undertook with my lad who played rugby seriously.
He played against a Welsh side when 18. It was in an exposed pitch on the Gower peninsular, on a wet Thursday evening in February. We remained at the pitch in the mistaken belief that the selectors would honour their promise to pick the touring team to Oz that night.
Off home to Brighton at just past midnight, the light snow just adding to the joy of the journey. It took just under 4 hrs, to include two stops for fuel. I got a fraction over 17mpg.

My 2011 W204 C220 CDI averages around 55mpg. It goes nowhere near motorways or dual carriageways. Hardly even use A roads. It's a cross country commute 22 miles each way so while I don't get to stretch it's legs much, I also don't see much traffic so can drive smoothly. I certainly don't drive "economically".
I tend to see much better economy on the drive home. It's usually around 50mpg on the way in and over 60mpg home.
