When I was a kid, my Dad took me on a trip to that London, and I was amazed to see things called omnibuses with lots of pictures and writing all over them: "Andrews Liver Salts" "Sloanes Liniment" "Wright's Coal Tar Soap" and so on. I was puzzled why they would sell all this stuff on the buses But they seemed to get a lot of customers.

Oh, and there were these moving stairs that took you right down under the ground, with lots more adverts on the walls to look at as you went past them without even walking. Wow!

The only advert I had seen prior to this trip was on a postcard stuck inside the village telephone box, put there by a nice lady who gave French lessons by appointment.

Back in the Eighties (I think) there used to be a fantastic Shell petrol advert.

Empty filling station forecourt, all silent Porsche (944 from memory, might be wrong) pulls quietly in, shot of car being filled, shop of inside of shop, tape cassette (look it up if you're under 25) being bought. Shot of inside of car, ignition goes on, petrol gauge clicks over to 'full', cassette goes in, Steppenwolf's classic 'Born To Be Wild' cranks up, car blasts off up empty road.

Fantastic!
