It occurred to me the other day that I have not seen anyone do dead hang full ROM pull ups for months, if not years.

I overheard a PT in my local gym saying that he can do 20 pull ups. The client said she would like to see him do that. He then knocked out 20 1/2 or even 1/4 reps.

Is the full pull up as dead as the full squat? Nobody seems interested in doing the exercise properly - just chasing rep numbers to impress mates.

I do mine from full extension to chest, only do partials at the end when I'm too fkd to do full ROM any more.
I worked up to sets of ten with 15kg earlier in the year but am back to struggling to do full sets sans weight at the moment.
Quite a few guys at my gym do very impressive sets of full range chins.

I do see some others at the gym doing proper pull ups, but they are definitely in the minority!

Personally I think way too much fuss is made of less than perfect form. There's a guy that works out at my gym whose form is far from perfect, but whose physique would put him in the top 1% of the population.

I would have no issue with someone saying 'I can do 20 half pull ups with kipping'. That's fair enough - it is probably a good hip and bicep exercise, but it's not a pull up and not even really a back exercise. It's also murder on your shoulders if you do ever achieve full depth (which some do by accident when they mistime a kip).

I agree re juicers. Good form is less important with juicers because they need less of a stimulus to build muscle so benefit more from isolation exercises. A half pull up is presumably not too bad at isolating shoulders and biceps.

Well if it works for them then fair enough, but if someone claims to be able to do X reps of an exercise or lift a certain amount of weight then they should be doing it with a full range of motion.

Me, I do!

Both myself and my mate I train with do 30 full ones at the start of each session.

Also. That pt doesn't sound very good.

Kipping pull ups should be considered a different exercise to pull ups. I use them during crossfit (evil) wods as it is the most efficient way of achieving the standard of chin (or chest) to bar.

Strict pull ups are tough.. I can do 12 unbroken!

That's what is wrong with crossfit. The only point of kipping is to hit high numbers for pull ups. Why not just lower the numbers and do proper pull ups?!

It's fun, It's competitive, it's sociable etc..

Rest assured that since joIning crossfit 4 months ago my strength, endurance and physique have transformed. It works for me..

Rather than getting into the crossfit debate let's agree to disagree? beer

It would still be all those things if you used proper form. And you wouldn't annihilate your joints and connective tissues!

That's what's bizarre - you could compete doing proper pull ups! You could even compete lifting weights properly.

I think that when you're quite new to any kind of physical training, it is all too easy to think that you know best and go all 'evangelical', preaching to others about what you think they are doing wrong, when in all probability, people are doing what they feel is best for them, basing their routines on personal/individual experience.

What works well for some may not work so well for others. Full ROM is important, but certainly not the be-all and end-all. I have read from quite a few sources that full ROM for Pull Ups can at times put too much strain on tendons, the biceps especially. Instead, a lot of professionals recommend not straightening the arms at the bottom of the movement.

As I am still a relative beginner, I have to trust those who know more than me and follow their advice..

Yes. The most I've ever done in one go is 17 but I've seen someone do 34 proper ones. After I've got the big set out of the way I'm usually fked and can only do a handful of I try soon afterwards. I'll then revert to negatives where I lower myself down under control and use a step or jump up to the top posirtion.

I think it's pretty much standard issue advice not to fully straighten the arms. But I think that's a different point from the more general distinction between full ROM, controlled reps and injury-causing jerky turkey swinging!

Nothing to do with evangelising - just an observation.

Lifting weights properly?? You've never trained with me you patronising . Focus on your own training instead of speaking bullst on the internet.
