Pretty sure the people working are simply eyeing up the cash..
If you're not there someone else would be.
I'm pretty sure most of them aren't. They're counting the hours until they can go and do normal family stuff. If you're not there someone else would be.
And whilst you're right that there are plenty who would take my place - it's just a shame that we can't have even a single day where family comes above commercial gain.

Will be eating at home.
I refuse to eat out on Christmas Day as it ruins the day for those having to work to cook for me and serve me.

Set number of tables, set times, set menus. A few hours out the day, then away to get pissed up. Triple time + healthy tips, free food and a couple of sneaky drinks. I don't remember them ever struggling for volunteers.
Not everyone gives a toss about Christmas. Ruins the day my arse.

Tell that to the mothers and fathers missing their kids opening presents etc. - just because you did it 'back in the day', doesn't mean that most people doing it now are doing it willingly. There are many people working in service industry roles who don't want to be there and don't get a worthwhile premium for doing it. My industry is probably one of the worst offenders - which is probably why I have a heightened sensitivity to it.Sump said:

If we didn't work, you wouldn't have any power to cook or watch tv's or play video games. No extra pay for Christmas either (15.5% uplift in yearly salary for shift work, so you can argue we do get compensation)
So, some of us are essential workers, all day, every single day.

I suspect that at some unspecified point in the past a variable shift allowance scheme was 'sold' back to the employer for the blanket shift payment ... if you work a fixed rota and full time hours there's little to be gained one way or the other ( hours variable rate vs blanket allowance), if the rota varies and/or you have lots of part timers who may work a disproprtionate amount of unsocials it adds complexity to make sure people are pulling their weight with unsocials ...

Worked Boxing Day this year and slept through Christmas Day last year, rostered to be off next year, yey.
24hr/365 shift cover is a pain at Christmas but you can't beat handing over problems to a new shift and walking out knowing its now someone else's problem.
It's also a legal requirement to staff our shifts to minimum numbers, so no reduction for Christmas. If someone goes I'll, someone has to cover.
