Seeking a new (2 years old) commuter car, as spend many miles on motorways BUT it has to deliver good MPG and have some oomph about it.

Currently in a MB E250 diesel which has been very good but need a replacement and so assume "a diesel". Prefer 4 doors
  • E350 Mercedes (may be temped by the cabriolet)
  • 530 BMW (like idea of 535 but not so much 525)
  • S80 Volvo (in my mind has to be the D5)
What else should be on the list as I appreciate that I need not to be so blinkered.

If you're after good mpg then the 4 cylinder engines in bmw and merc are very good, plus decent power/torque too. Depends what you're after really.

The 3.0 will be smoother quieter more powerful & drink a bit more fuel get them mapped & they'll be a bit better for example an E250 at Motorway speeds will be at around 47-52mpg, an E350 will be at around 39-44mpg (with a map it'll sit at 44-48mpg at the speeds you mention) they also did that engine in the C Class if you don't want a bigger car.

The E350 with a map/tune is mostly where I arrived BUT want to also think of other options.

(PS you are correct my unmapped E250 sits at high 40's wink cf Volvo D5s which saw low 50's)
