Things have changed since my last thread about what £1k car to get. I would've settled on an E46 330D or E39 530D (early 2000s) but am currently thinking about upping my budget to £5k to get something more modern and reliable. I'm still debating this in my mind however. For £5k I could get a nice E60 530D (late 2000s) but I risk losing more in depreciation and the fact that it actually might not be more reliable than a £1k E39 (still has the swirl flaps for example). After all a £5k E60 is still a cheap old car.

What are you're thoughts?

I suppose u could get through 4 cheap 1k barges for the price of your 5k barge. But you could lose everything that way.

I find widening the budget is a slippery slope though
..

Plan the flight and fly the plan (but in a car, obviously)

Depreciation is a lot slower from 5k downwards get a good car (whatever it maybe) look after it & depending on how many miles are under it's belt, it'll always be worth something.
