I'm after a STURDY wooden work bench for the garage. Currently I've got a cheap metal thing that is super flimsy and no good for bolting a vice to!

Anyone got any experience / recommendations for the various ebay options? id like a backboard if possible.

Both of mine are homemade.
Angle iron frames bolted together.
Tops made of several pieces of 2x2 cut to desired length, drilled through in 2 places, glued & held together with lengths of threaded steel rod with nuts on their ends to clamp the assembly together. Once the glue has dried plane level, square the ends off & mount to the frame. Fix steel sheet to the top if desired.

Mine is actually just the el-cheapo ebay metal rack shelving split at 1/2 height screwed to el-cheapo kitchen work surface, which is rigidly bolted to the garage walls, and is sturdy as anything with vice fitted.

Yes, whatever you use is improved by bolting it to the wall (and/or floor) - otherwise you are relying on its weight and friction with the floor to resist the heaving you will do!

I bought mine as a flat-pack wooden bench from B&Q, thirty years ago, and bolted to the wall, as said above, it has withstood all I can throw at it.
The front plank became a little worn and uneven, so I screwed a length of alloy plate to it with countersunks for a flat surface.

B&Q don't sell them any more, but I see these:

OR, steal the design ideas from the above and elsewhere, go to a second hand timber yard and DiY your own to fit your available space.

Lengths of 3x2" 3/4" waterproof chipboard, ally or steel covering if you like but we didn't bother.
Fitted to the barn making storage to 6 foot and work bench round the edges
Cheap and easy to fit where you want it
