Cannabis testing prior to IVF

I'm after some advice from anyone in the know. We're looking to start IVF soon, and accordingly no nicotine is to be detected with in a three month period before starting IVF - gave up five months ago. Last night we were at friends, one of who smokes weed at times. When I was younger I dabbled a little, but haven't done so for years. Last night he decided to roll a joint, and I took a whiff of it and decided it smelt amazing, I think it was the Jack Daniels talking! Making sure there was no tobacco in it I got him to roll me a joint, which I then smoked.

This morning Sarah is furious at me. The suggestion is that now we'll need to delay IVF for three months, as this is how long she believes it can be detected for. I can't find any concrete answers on Google. I'm also seeing a doctor tomorrow, about a completely different matter. She's pretty laid back, and would give me the answer I need in confidence.
As mentioned, I'm not a regular user, this was the first joint I've smoked in years.

In which case I can't see a single spliff registering

Interesting ivf is rationed this way
Is it the NHS getting value or a private clinic looking after their stats out of interest?

Imagine if it spread to other sectors and treatments......

Thanks for your thoughts, let's hope this is the case.

My understanding is that because of the significant cost involved they like to ensure that there is an optimum chance of success, IE not simply being on a hiding to nothing.

Nothing useful to say but I understand how Sarah feels as a family member is doing IVF and she has a similar attitude when her husband eats junk food etc. You want both partners to be as healthy as possible. She is taking CoQ10 pills to try to optimise her health.

I guess the best way of looking at it is that if you're going to race your car, you want everything to be optimum - power delivery, brakes, aerodynamics, tyres.

Yeah, I get her annoyance, it was a silly thing to do. I suspect it was down to me missing cigarettes. Let's keep fingers crossed that the 7-10 day window is the case!

It's not the money (although at around £15k a pop, that can be an issue for many) so much as the emotional demands. It can be a real rollercoaster ride of lows (eggs aren't healthy) and highs (embryos beginning to grow) well before the mother is even carrying a child!

When we did IVF they told me to give up which I did but they never tested me for it, they just took my word for it. The kids are nearly 5 now so that was about 6 years ago so things may have changed by now.....

Given the circumstances old chap, and given I'm having a quiet day, I've phoned a friend of mine who is a hospital consultant and knows a fair bit about these things...

If it's a one off spliff as you say, there will be no detectable traces in your system after a maximum of three days.

If however you were a regular (daily) long term user, then traces could be detectable for up to three months from your last intake.

No bother at all chap. Friends of ours went through the IVF thing some time ago and were eventually successful. They had a few 'setbacks' along the way, not unlike you're experiencing now so I do sympathise with you.

However, in the light of what my Doctor friend has told me and what you've said, you've nothing to worry about.
