mounting TV above f/place and soundbase considerations
Discussion
afternoon all, any advice appreciated on the following:
we plan to reconfigure and redecorate our lounge over the coming weeks which is a relatively square room (roughly 4.5x4.5 m2). The fireplace is centre on one of the walls, without alcoves.
as part of the changes I am trying to convince my wife that mounting our 40" flat screen TV above the fire place will be a good idea as it will free up space in a corner which is currently occupied by a TV & unit.

- 1: Will the TV be big enough to be positioned at height in a room of this size? I would prefer not to replace it as it is quite new and good quality.
- 2: I have a nice sound base at present. If the TV is wall mounted will it sound odd if it were located in a cabinet to one side of the fireplace?
- 3: My wife thinks that wall mounting a TV is council however I disagree, especially as our house is relatively new and the décor will be quite modern in this particular room. How can I convince her otherwise?
- 4: Any other considerations or options that I have overlooked?
Firstly what are you going to put in the corner?
Where are you going to keep the DVD's and the Blu-ray player/sky box?
The sound will probably seem weird not coming from where the TV is, you could try this first.
I am always against mounting TV's above the fireplace. Most TV's will be OK with the heat but how will your neck be after a 3 hour session watching TV?
I would save the money and buy a new TV!

thanks for the reply. based upon the proposed seating arrangements the corner would be used for an armchair. my assumption was that the sky box and sound base would be housed in a small floor based unit to one side of the fire place. dvds are not a consideration.Where are you going to keep the DVD's and the Blu-ray player/sky box?

good point re necks!
I've not 2 mins ago taken this photo for a thread on avforums....

Everyone goes on about how mounting a TV above a fireplace is a terrible idea on forums but we never get stiff necks or find it uncomfortable, it's simply not an issue however we do sit around 4m from the screen.
It allows a lovely seating arrangement that really works, especially as we normally have a large coffee table in the centre of the 3 sofas (put away due to toddler at present).

thanks for the info. we would be 4m+ too, which size screen do you use?
