I've had a crazy notion to project an image onto our house next Christmas instead of lights. What I need to know is whether this is an affordable & realistic thing to do.
As our house stands out as one of the more interesting properties in the village, I thought we could do something charitable with it and try to raise a few quid for a good local cause.
Ideally I'd like to see a gingerbread house projected over ours in exactly the same shape, as in my mind that design would be perfect.
So what do I need to know? And what do you need to know to advise on this?

I guess it will depend on how good you are at graphic design.

You will need a bright projector, probably around 6-10K depending how big your house is and how much ambient light there is.

To figure out where the projector goes will depend on the lens and the length of your house.

As a guide, Projection distance.

15 meter wide image with a 0.8 lens would be 12 meters from the house.
15 meter wide image with a 1.7 lens (normally a kit lens) would be 26 meters from the house.

Logistic wise:

You will need to map the house out.
Figure out the projector Location (needs to be waterproof and damp free)
Get power to the projector
Figure out where the laptop/ PC going to be located, if it's in the house you will need to run CAT 5 or fibre depending on the resolution you are going to use.

That should get you started smile

Well it sounds more complex than I had imagined, but I do have a year to get it sorted. My friend's son has a graphic design degree, so he's probably a good starting point. I have a projector, but it's not man enough at 3000 lumens and I don't think the lens is interchangeable, so I'll be on the look out for second hand if affordable.
Location I think is good. There's no street lighting, which is great, and opposite (across the road) is the church hall. We would probably be given permission by the church to mount the projector there.

I think you'll need to be more creative that this, and produce the sequences correctly so that the projector doesn't project into the windows or outside of the frame of the house, and tailor what is projected to the topography of the face of the house. Would be fun to try, but I imagine take a heck of a lot of time to get anywhere near acceptable.

Give it a go and see what happens smile

Nothing to lose if you already have it.

Thanks for your help with this so far. I've now got a bee in my bonnet and it kept me awake most of last night! I've even started thinking that if I can nail it, there'd have to be a Halloween one too.
For the information of those who dont know that Le Mans has more then just a race circuit, during the summer there is the Nuit des Chimeres in the old town. It is quite magical and I've seen it numerous times. This of course is where the inspiration comes from for my little house! If your driving down south in the summer, it makes a great overnight stop off.
This is an image on the city wall which rolls along like a belt.
