Right. Bit of a strange situation for me. Would like some PH advice, also feel free to post your own stories, if you feel that it's an intriguing subject smile

One of my best mates split with his girlfriend of 2 years about 8-10 months ago. No kids together. He wanted her back, but got over it. He's since found a lovely new girlfriend, who our friend group all get on with and he's now moved in.

His ex and I started talking about a month or two ago, just casual friendly stuff, never considered her more than a friend previously. Of course one thing has now led to another and we've started sleeping together.

Said mate and his new girlfriend have invited all our friend group over for new years eve drinks, but I was actually intending to go to his exes with my daughter and her kids just to chill out.

Whilst I don't think he'll have a problem with it, I was planning to mention it (that we're seeing each other) to him out of courtesy tonight before everyone gets pissed up. Anything in particular I should say/avoid saying? Is there a right way to act here?

I would make damn sure your mate knows that you didnt start seeing her until well after they split up.

Had the same 40 years ago married the girl and we are still married, my mate never talked to me again. His loss.

If you can both be adult about it then I see no issue in just telling him.

I have recently split from my ex of 2+ years, and I've taken it harder than I did when I split with my sons mother whom I was with for nearly 9 years.

In either situation I'd not be happy if one of my mates started seeing either of them, it's just how I am, same way I'd never go near an ex of any of my mates.

Be prepared for a ttting from your mate followed by a fallout at worst or him not being bothered at best, it's only going to go one way or another

If he's reallly one of your best mates and you feel some awkwardness here then if you gave a crap you would have talked to him about it before getting to the point where you're an item.

Bit late now no?

With reference to your q however if he's moved on with a new lady friend I doubt he'd see much of an issue with it.

You sure she's not just doing it to try and get some kind of reaction from her ex / your mate? Maybe she's hoping he'll get all jealous and want her back? Maybe she left him specifically to try and get with you? Maybe its just a rebound thing? Seems a bit odd to me though, but hell, if it were me I'd probably be doing the same!

One of my good mates is living with an ex of mine. We lived together for 3 years previously. He told me over the phone and I could tell he was stting it about telling me but I couldn't care less, life's too short for that st. Good luck to them.
It helps that she's twice the size that she used to be and now looks like she needs a good scrub. biggrin

My best mate back when we were in our 20s ended up marrying my ex girlfriend ,ours was a long distance thing as I lived 150 miles away .I am certain that they were seeing each other before we properly split up . Not a problem as far as I was concerned as she was desperate for marriage and I wasn't interested .
I was best man at the wedding .

As suggested above, tread carefully and make sure he knows it's a recent thing, not from back when they were together. If he is mature enough then I'm sure he won't have a problem but on the other side of the coin, be prepared to lose a friend.

Good luck!

I've never got the hang up some people have with their exes. Like they have some kind of ownership right over them after their relationship is over. Utterly bonkers.

I know a family that has been ripped apart because brother 2 got into a relationship with a girl brother 1 had dated 12 years previously!! Even though brother 1 was married for the last 10 years to someone else and had 3 kinds. I say "was married" because as part of the ststorm brother 1 kicked up when brother 2 was seeing his ex, brother 1's wife left him, obviously furious that her husband would give two hoots what an ex from 12 yrs ago was up to.

So he's lost his wife, and his brother, all for some weird sense of betrayal that brother 2 would sleep with a woman from his past that he admits means nothing to him anyway and he hadn't even seen for 12 years.

Totally crackers.

I'd leave off telling him until another day - ie not NYE.

It might ruin it for him - gets pissed, has a row with his current bird etc etc

Leave it until you can see him face to face without beer involved

I've always been of the impression that a friend's ex is an absolute no-go. I wouldn't be massively happy if I were the mate. You probably should have asked for his opinion before it became semi-serious. Did your mate and his ex break up amicably or badly? I reckon that if he isn't bothered, your friendship with him might become awkward with time.

I agree - today is not the best day to tell him.

Same here, poor timing tonight when alcohol is likely on the agenda. Tell him next weekend or something.
