I've lived overseas for the last 7 years and I've heard several things have changed with cars, i.e. No tax discs for starters. When you sell a car the road tax is cancelled, the buyer has to re-tax it.

How do you do that, if you go and buy a car privately?? Over the phone, when you buy the car, so you can legally drive it away?

And insurance, do you buy/book that over the phone?

I don't currently have a car, just arrived 'in country' three days ago. I assume I'll have no 'no claims bonus'? I'd have to speak to a broker before I even go look at a car, do some ground work.

You tax it from 1st day of month you buy it. Seller cashes it in, gets a refund from last day of month car sold. DVLA get 2 months tax for same month. Bit of a con, but no doubt their customer clinics asked for that system wink

You can tax it online. No tax disc. Can take 5 days to show up on their system.

With your insurance no claims issue, you'll probably need to actually speak with them, some might grant it, some won't.

Tax is done online now, very quick and easy. Insurance I do over the phone, can be a tedious job.

As above.

When you buy a car the previous owner sends off the V5C (Registration Document) to the DVLA in Swansea except for the little green 'New Keeper's Supplement' that you as the new owner keep hold of. On that you'll have a document reference number which can be used to tax the car at a Post Office or Online or Phone, etc.

The doc number on the new keeper supplement (which is basically the V5 doc reference number with an extra digit added on) 'tells' the DVLA system that the vehicle is being taxed by a new owner. They'll duly cancel the road tax / refund the previous owner for any full months left once they receive the V5C in the post - but your taxing the vehicle is unaffected.

So long as you have taxed it at your end before using it on the road (e.g. driving it home) - you are legally covered in that department. Insurance will vary - if you have a UK license or a friend/family member with one to hand you can always get day-insurance to cover bringing the vehicle home (£30 approx) if you haven't got full cover in place by then. I've done that before - it takes five mins to sort out.

The 5 days bit is for the public facing website, internally the dvla have a system that is immediately updated once an application is successful.

When the new system without tax disc was introduced i taxed mine on the first day of the month, but was concerned with any gap between it being successfully applied for and showing. After emailing them they confirmed the above that the delay only applies to the public vehicle enquiry website

Thanks chaps, I guess I'll have to plan things out a bit instead of just rocking up at some vendors house with a pocket full of pound notes.
