Wheel choices when the bike has both QR and through axle

I am looking at this bike:-

but the wheels are a bit meh when compared to the rest of the bike. However, the front is a through axle and the rear a QR. Will this make finding and buying replacement wheels difficult? My current CX bike has this combination of fitment as well.

Thoughts would be welcome, as would alternatives to the Cannondale - I also fancy the Giant TCR Advanced Disc which has through axles front and rear.

Can't help on the bik, but wheels are easy. If you go for a new set of rims, just use Hope hubs. They convert from 9mm to 15mm (and possible 20mm) by swapping the end caps. Mine (bought a complete wheel set) came with 9mm and 15mm capsas standard.

Cero wheels from Cycle Division come with the adapters to switch between QR/12mm/15mm.

I'm loving the CRD23 wheels, even though they dropped the price another fiver a week after I got them (now £280 with the voucher code off their homepage)

It depends on budget really. I've been running a couple of sets of the Hunt X Mason wheels on my Tripster, one with Road tyres and the other with knobblies. They've been great wheels but for a proper road bike like the Canondale, I'd be included to look at either the Carbon Aero 30's

All of their wheels are tubeless ready and from what I've been told, road tubeless is the way forward!
Hunt did have some returns which they were doing with a discount in the run up to Christmas but I think you had to phone them to see what was still available.

There's a lot of love for Hunt Wheels, and I've yet to hear a bad word against them from any owner. But ultimately there are only a few manufacturers of components that all these new wheelset retail companies use. On that basis, they're most likely rebranded Novatec hubs, laced with Pillar spokes to Gigantex (carbon) or Kinklin (alu) rims. If so, that's not a bad thing, but I can't see how they'd be markedly different from the offerings of anybody else that were built up from the same components.

That said, I'd have them over equally priced wheels from a rival. Just because.

NB Nowadays, a lot of the mainstream manufacturers' disc brake wheels also come with interchangeable axle end caps. So you could also look at the Mavic Ksyrium Disc Elite, DT Swiss DB range etc.

If Hunt are value then the Cero's I mentioned (and ride) must be a steal. They also do a 38mm deep carbon wheel too, almost half the cost of the Hunts.

I came to a similar conclusion yesterday, and ordered a pair of ARD23s. I don't think they would ever have been worth the £460 original asking price but at £280 (thanks for posting the tip about the voucher code, by the way) they looked worth a punt as a climbing/gusty day set.

Not a direct match to any of the Hunts, as the ARD hubs are apparently Chosen, the spokes CX-Ray and the rims are a 19mm internal. Whether than makes them better, worse or similar as a package I wouldn't know but they're undeniably less expensive and Cero owner feedback is equally positive. I'm certainly encouraged that you like yours.

I went for Mavic Ksyrium Elite Discs for my GT Grade with a 15mm through-axle at the front and 9mm QR at the rear. After some epic faffing from Mavic I eventually got the right adaptors posted from Bike24.de. They're lovely wheels but if I had my time again I think I'd just buy the Hunts and save the hassle!

Good man, I've been looking around for a replacement wheelset and I am 99.99% sure I'll be going the Hunt route. The price for what seems like good wheels is what swung me. No massive amounts of negative reviews although I'm sure if I look hard enough there'll be someone unhappy.

I saw the end of season reduced price wheels, if I'd been home I'd have snapped up a set for the CX bike at the reduced price, unfortunately I'm still offshore. Bugger!

I was home yesterday morning and I tried. Only way to buy was to call, and the line was permanently engaged until they were all gone. Probably had as much chance of getting through as winning the lottery.

Maybe they'll do it again some time. They sell with a 60 day approval period so they must get a set returned every now and then to dispose of.

Hunt Vs Cero, how are you guys finding your choices? Im looking for some for my new Croix De Fer as the ones it comes with are over 2kg in total. Theyre a strong 32h wheelset but I want to lose a bit of weight on them. Hunt 4 Seasons, Cero ARD23 and Fulcrum 5 racing LG Disc are all in contention. I can get the Fulcrums for a shade over £200 and at that price, I find it hard to throw another £150 at the Hunts. The Ceros yoyo up and down in price.

No problems with my Cero's, was even contemplating getting a second set so I could leave some gravel/CX tyres on them. And then the price crept up (£345 now).
