Am about to start looking for the replacement for our venerable 2010 D5 XC90, drawing up a shortlit to try and get some weekend test drives organised.

Which Q7 would owners suggest? Natural instinct is the diesel, but with diesel prices escalating, maybe it's not the best option these days?

The eTron is out as 7 seats are a requirement.

Other cars being looked at as follows in case anyone has also just been through this:

- new XC90
- Discovery
- Merc GLS (not sure on costs?)
- X5 (not big enough in the back?)
- Range Rover Sport (ditto the X5?)

Thanks.

Out of interest, what swung the decision?

We are just getting out of our 3rd Q7 - had the last shape 4.2 petrol and 3.0d, and currently have the new shape 3.0d.

The latest version just does not seem as well built as the previous one and we have had lots of niggles with it, sounds fairly consistent feedback at the local dealership.

We were going to upgrade to the SQ7 but tried out a Tesla Model X on as a bit of left-field choice and ended up loving it, worked out roughly the same cost at the SQ7 (and a bit faster) and will do 300 miles (allegedly) on a charge so more than enough for all our purposes.

Must admit moving away from diesel at the moment seems a good idea as well, it's only going to get more punitive.

Trouble is the price of Teslas is going up on a monthly basis, not sure if I would have ordered with the current list prices.

Other than that the biggest debates are 6 seat or 7 seat config and whether auto-pilot 2 is going to be worth it...

Happy to provide more detailed opinions but definitely the rear most seats were a big reason for us choosing the Q7's in the first place. They are more than just child seats and having 3 kids for a long journey, it is good for everyone's sanity to stick one back there. Couldn't live without it now.

Cheers,

Phil

Selecting a new Q7 engine is easy.

3.0d 218bhp detuned - not enough power and no real economy benefit.
3.0d 272bhp good engine, good economy.
e-tron: too expensive, doesn't improve economy enough, 5 seats only
SQ7: pointlessly powerful engine that you'll struggle to use in the real world.

You'd have to be an idiot to go for anything other than the 272bhp 3.0 diesel.

My SQ7 arrives next month.

biggrin

(I'd add the ModelX to the list but the prices are eye watering...and I'm not sure we can wait long enough.

Went through all of those last year and threw in a Range Rover Vogue and Bentayga.

XC90 - very nice in many ways but engines are a bit weak. Was more compelling when the old model was priced £10k less than a Q7.
Discovery - Disco3 heavy and agricultural, Disco4 not out for a while yet. Issues with LR build quality.
Merc GLS - very expensive, worst looker IMO, bad depreciation
X5 - as you say, not big enough
RR Sport - as a 6'2" chap I refuse to stoop to get into a car this big. Felt tiny inside. V8 diesel now seriously old.
RR - very nice but 5 seats only and a £30k premium over the Q7. Same V8 diesel issues as RR sport and FF RR just too heavy on the juice.
Bentayga - too big a premium over the SQ7 it's based on for the undeniably luxurious interior.

Overall the Q7 pushed our buttons in terms of good (modern) engines, interior quality, and VFM. I don't think it's a looker but its good in all other regards.
Petrol options in this sector are either not offered or ruinous in fuel costs.
Hybrids offer compromises that we couldn't live with.
We do big miles in our Q7 (towing track car up and down the country, family ski trips etc) so a pure EV not an option.

Given the tech involved in the SQ7 I actually think it's pretty good value. Having said that, we've been very happy with our Q7 for 8 years so it started with an advantage.

I'm 6,3" and I don't have to stoop to get into my dad's RRS...plus the V6 diesel is much better suited (a brilliant engine for a diesel) and the power difference isn't noticeable.

V6 and V8 Supercharged petrol station are also available.

It's a lovely car although there are a few build quality issues, I love it. (He's on his second one now)

New model RRS or old one? I distinctly had to duck my head to get in on the new model. Maybe there's a trick to it?

The V6 diesel is a very good engine, granted, but it doesn't have quite enough in reserve in this class of vehicle for my preferences.

Much as the FF RR is a wonderful thing, I can't get beyond the thirst.

New model, current one is a 16 plate.

I'm surprised at your view on the engine, it's pretty rapid seeing it's got 306bhp.

Not entirely serious..but two RS6 Avants would more than meet your need, guess you would always need to take the wife with you to drive the other one, so yeah it has it's downside too....biggrin

I ended up with another XC90.

I do like the Q7 a lot, but I think usable space is better in the XC90 and, critically, they're just a bit heavy price wise to really shine against the Volvo.

To be fair that position was underscored when Volvo did a used car event this weekend with a solid finance offer (0% - what's not to like. It runs to Monday) and probably not coincidentally a number of cars with top specs and dealers prepared to haggle.

Fuller verdict here:
