It has just come to my attention that some young women are now wearing glasses with clear lenses as a fashion statement.
Have you heard anything like it !

I'd say it's been going on for about 40 years.
At least.

If I hadn't have been told about it today there's no way I would have even considered it goes on.Why would I. It's ridiculous. Wearing glasses has always been seen as a negative thing if anything. And yes I wear glasses....for reading and close up work.
If it was just for the displaying of a certain designer label then maybe I could just about understand it because I'm aware that perceived status by label is the way of the world for many

Los Angeles Herald said:
The Useful Lorgnette
"We are putting eyeglasses into lorgnettes." announced the jewellery clerk who goes home to luncheon. Of the other boarders, the young man from the bank was the only one who expressed interest. "Why, I thought you always did that," he said. "What is a lorgnette for If it isn't to hold eyeglasses?"

The jewellery clerk smiled contentedly. He just doted on imparting information. He would have hugely enjoyed posing as the autocrat of the table, only no one but the younger man from the bank ever appeared entertained or instructed by his observations. Now and then the girl art student acknowledged his presence and conversation, but at such times it was usually to disagree with him that she spoke. This time the jewellery clerk said:

"Yes, you would be surprised to know how many real glasses we are fitting to the lorgnettes this season. I thought you knew that in the past the great majority of lorgnettes were simply for ornamentation and not necessarily for utility. It has been the fashion for women to wear these daintily enamelled productions—the girl art student here whispered to the man who dabbled in stocks on margins that the jewellery clerk talked like a guide book —"to set off the rest of their costume. They wore them just as they wore the chatelaines and as they later wore what is loosely known as the "dingle dangle.' There was just plain glass in the thing, but it was the custom."

"And a very pretty custom, too." said the girl art student, coming to the defence of the ways of her sex. "If there is anything more than another which irritates me beyond expression it is the m. en contempt with which the ignorant look upon the things that are pretty. Beauty ought to have as much of a place in our economy as usefulness. But it is the provincial pleasure to sneer at dainties. Why. I know some country girls who think the wearing of a lorgnette is the height of affectation. think because a girl makes herself attractive by wearing such things she is 'stuck up.' "

"Those girls," observed the man who dabbled in the market, "are the sisters of the men who consider the wearing of a dress suit a mark of inferiority in the male animal. You all know how a certain 'hoping-to-be' national character foreswore the dress suit because the countrymen who comprised his backwoods constituency shied at such garb and regarded this evidence of civilization and social amenity as the hall mark of the dude. It is all a question of ignorance."

"But the lorgnette really is becoming a thing of use," persisted jewellery clerk. "We are filling lots of prescriptions for certain grades of glass to go in expensive lorgnettes. Nearsighted persons who imagine they don't look well in spectacles are the principal buyers. They use them at the theater, the art gallery, the baseball game and even at receptions. They would rather be thought affected than be thought deficient in sight."

And the girl art student permitted the statement to pass unchallenged.

I worked with someone a while back, about 8 years back.

One day he started wearing glasses. A short while later he commented they were simply clear non correcting glass. I said so they are a fashion item? Yes came the reply. I don't think he forgave me laughing.

He was a bit strange anyway.

The fad lasted about 18 monthslaugh

As a 'young man' who wears glasses. I'd pay good money to not be blind as a fking bat (ok, -3 in both eyes) at 22 tongue out

Then again I can't say I subscribe to many of the latest fashions

As someone whose worn glasses pretty much all my life. Hate the bd things.
I'd pay money to be able to see properly without them, a method that is permanent and has no chance of damaging the eyes further.
Can't figure out for the life of me why anyone would WANT to wear the retched things.

I hate putting them on, I hate wearing them, I hate cleaning them and how the tv glares on them, I hate whatever this greasy crap is that somehow accumulates on them and is then impossible to clean off, I hate not being able to see without them.
Sun glasses are expensive, glasses are expensive, buying swimming goggles years ago was expensive.

The only positive is I can see with them.

Awful things.

I only wear them if I'm racing (running) in the rain or swimming (with goggles).

Daft comment.... Nothing wrong with them. I am -5.50 and glasses are a PITA. My vision with lenses is fantastic and the good soft lenses allow a lot of Oxygen through so they really do not fk your eyes up.

Fantastic things. I only wear them 14 - 16 hours a day. Since 1985.
