It appears that the lord really does work in mysterious ways.

A Cumbrian Vicar has escaped a ban for 12 points totted up after being caught speeding a fourth time.

It does not say why he was not offered a Speed Awareness Course, although after being caught 4 times, it would appear that it would not have done him much good, if he had not learned his lesson after 3 previous offences within the prescribed time!

A speeding vicar has managed to cling onto his driving licence - despite being caught speeding for a fourth time.

Reverend Timothy Mark Edwards, from Irthington, appeared before magistrates in Carlisle after admitting driving his Skoda car at 36mph along Carlisle Road, in Brampton, on June 15. The legal limit is 30mph.

The 37-year-old vicar was given three penalty points for the offence, bringing his total to 12. He pleaded with magistrates not to impose an automatic driving ban.

John Smith, defending, said that Mr Edwards' job within the Parish Church of St Kentigern, in Irthington, meant he visited a lot of parishioners.

Many live in remote areas and, with no public transport and it being too far to cycle, it would be the public who would suffer should he be banned.

A ban would also prevent Mr Edwards from carrying out school visits and spending time with sick people at Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary.

After a lengthy discussion magistrates agreed not to ban him. In addition to the points he was fined £144 with court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £30.
Can the court ORDER a driver to attend a SAC as well as his fine and points? It would seem appropriate IF the courses are any good, and it could help cure him of his habit.

I have started driving friends, (a very elderly couple) about because the lady driver no longer feels confident in her own car at night, and has difficulty managing her disabled husband in and out of their car.
Would I be accorded the same consideration, or would I have to be ferrying more elderly people around to qualify?

If the value of a person's job to society is generally reflected in its salary, then I would say that a vicar should be afforded less leniency than about 95% of drivers on the road, not more.

Do you know how long it takes to get ordained AND be given your own Parish...? smile

I'm still puzzled as to why he didn't take a Speed Awareness Course - unless he did and his "get out of jail free card" was outlasted by his points collection!

Has he been caught "four times"? Or has he just been prosecuted four times, and actually caught five times - taking a course instead of points for one of them, disbarring himself from another course...?

As a vicar and a pillar of the community, shouldn't he be held to a much higher standard as everyone else?

36 in a modern car in a 30 is hardly the crime of the century.

Good luck to him in escaping an unnecessary ban for something so minor. Had he been caught doing 50 in a 30 4 times it might be a different matter.

Where did you pick up it was a modern car?

It's not crime of the century, but then a 28 day driving ban wouldn't have been punishment of the century either.

Getting caught once, twice. Fair cop. Sitting on 9 points and still doing it?

It won't happen to me mentally.

Lost count the amount of times I've stopped someone for speeding, they don't want the course as 'I never normally speed'. Month or so later (or next day in one case!) Caught speeding again. This time they wanted it...

I got done for 55 in a 30 once. It was a 3 lane road (no central reservation) with no schools, houses, dangerous junctions etc nearby; simply a silly low limit for no apparent reason. Trafpol located around a blind bind of course ... ah the memories bandit

It says Skoda.

What do you think the changes are of it being a Tesco Value VW, compared to the chances of it being an Estelle?

It may well have been reasonable to let the guy have the hardship reason not to disqualify in the circumstances. There isn't any or very little practical public transport in his area.
He can only use the excuse once though. Judging by his record it won't take long before he comes round again.
You have to be a major prick to get caught more than once though.
