I fell off.
A friend an went for a ride on Monday. Lovely 60km through the mendips and a stop in Bath for a coffee. We decided on a gentle pootle back along the Bristol to Bath cycle path. Half a mile in I hit some black ice and smashed in to the tarmac. My mate crashed on the ice avoiding me and mangled his bars and levers. My bike was ok but I broke my hip.

I've been put back together but they've given me a Zimmer frame.

All piss taking welcome!!

Ouch heal up soon

If its any consolation down the road in Wilts it was really bad time of year out of the 20 or so riders from my club that did rides about 6 fell off on various rides and hit the deck due to ice, there is ice and there is ICE, and recently we have had the latter

Jealous, I only got crutches when I did mine.

Good luck with your recovery and physio, hope you're back on the bike soon.

Ouch feel for you.

Nearly 2 years since I came off and broke my hip too - fractured neck of femur repaired with 3 cannulated screws, how have they treated you?

Any questions about recovery please ask.

Have you had a zimmer fit yet? Your position doesn't look very aero and you're going to be wasting valuable watts.

Heal fast chap. Pablo of this parish (and also of Bristol) broke his hip back in the Autumn and may be able to give advice on healing/recovery times etc.

Edd very kindly administered all three...

Depends on the break and the medical advice you've been given regarding exercise and mobility but the longer you are able to rest, the quicker you will recover...

The hospital were able to fit aero bars to the zimmer frame for a better position too.

Awesome! I'm going to be toe touching on crutches for eight weeks and then on crutches still for another four. Three months before I can drive or walk unaided.

I think there's a plate and a dynamic screw in there but I was a bit distracted when the surgeon explained it because the morphine had made me madly itchy!

Ah yes I forgot the morphine itches, had those for a good week.

Are you having a daily blood thinning injection too? I had to self administer that for a month.

I was no weight bearing on crutches for 6 weeks then partial for another 6 then building back up to full.

I had a Physio appointment within two weeks of my fall and had some 18-20 sessions so push for it though the NHS.

All the best.

Thank you everyone. I've already had several offers of stabilisers for the bike...

There's a chance that the hip can't be saved because it was a mess inside and they're worried about the blood supply. It will probably be ok but only time will tell. I've just asked for the pictures!

Of course this has ballsed up my goals for the year... 6000 km, new bike and audax? Well it might be a new bike because I broke the old one but my goal now is to get back on the bike and buy some studded ice tyres!

Necrosis is a (small) risk in all hip breaks, I have one further checkup on mine to go, nearly 2 years after I broke it. Did you go to RUH? I ended up in Southmead and I have to say they were superb.

I was really lucky and the orthopaedic surgeon fancied his chances that just total rest was a better option than surgery given my age and fitness. I was told to rest and let it heal so I took them literally and did nothing for six weeks bar watch the Olympics and La vuelta! Take it easy and don't push yourself, you'll be out of breath very quickly.

Six months later and it still twinges of I get out of the car too quickly and swing my right leg out to the pavement but that's about it. My thumb is still stiff though the cold weather doesn't help.

SouthMead were awesome, really great staff and a nice new hospital. People moan about the parking but it's a really nice environment and definitely quickens recovery time being somewhere like that

We were due to head out on Monday around North Yorkshire. It was absolutely treacherous with black ice.

Get better soon!

There were two of us so it was easier.
I did make him crash though!

It was indeed the RUH. I crashed within spitting of it as my mate walked the two bikes to A&E quicker than the ambulance. The staff here have been excellent.

The break was displaced (the paramedics could see it) so it had to be surgery.

Before and after!
I'm off home later with crutches and other bits of medical equipment. Whilst the level of care and the staff have been excellent I'm ready to get home now.

Not sure how long before I'm going to be back on two wheels. I've got a follow up in six weeks when I should know more. The turbo I bought second hand before Christmas might come in handy though!
