Got this on a popular auction site recently... it's a 2010 1.6 turbo diesel mini with the later BMW N47 engine, generally quite tidy, done 22k miles, air con, parking sensors etc. Decent spec in general (i.e. much better than her 07 mini one) although she wants some bigger wheels and I can't blame her!!



Got it less than 50% of its market value, but there is a catch, here's a clue. Virtual pint if you can tell what it is.

Nothing says I love you like a broken poverty spec mini.No idea what the bust part is, I will hanker a guess its systemic and there will be many mini owners chiming in with common knowledge soon

On a serious note my ebay detective work says hole in engine block, that doesn't look like a hole? Terminal or not?

It's terminal in the sense that it is currently a non runner, but on closer inspection it appears less catastrophic than first thought.
The hole is small and the rod has thrown due to failure of the bolts and become stuck where it still resides with the piston not far from BDC, meaning damage to the head is unlikely.
The small hole can be welded or even filled using a high quality metal composite such as Belzona 1111.

The journal has some scoring from what I can tell having not yet removed the crank so needs a regrind and two new big end shells (rest of the mains and big ends are fine) and I've already got a replacement rod and piston on the way for £75. I'll fit new rod bolts too.
Initially I was just going to get another engine, but with the BMW N47 engine not being cheap and the failure not being as bad as I expected I thought it was worth exploring the viability of repairing the engine, and therefore it might be more interesting to readers than a usual engine out engine in job.. I normally spend my spare time working on cars and bikes that are somewhat more exciting than this, but even poverty spec cars need love

Around September 2010 production I think.W16 (PSA DV6) was September 2006 until September 2010.

I also filled the ports to make sure the valves weren't ever so slightly bent but no leaks were found so that's a nice little win.

I then spent some time trying to clean out the ports, they were heavily clogged with carbon deposits, mostly on the inlet side. I honestly believe that had this car spent another 20000 miles plodding round London at the same pace it had been then it would have ended up knackered anyway due to the carbon build up.

Inlets need some more time, FYI I've been using a mild acid wheel cleaner.. not strong enough to damage the head or valves etc. But shifts the carbon well.

Got some bits too new rod bolts, head bolts etc, clutch and head gasket on the way.. also here's the original and replacement piston/rod. The piston is fine but as you can see the rod is f
ked. What's very odd is that due to where the rod failed I was expecting to find snapped rod bolts but they were sat in the sump intact! Meaning I'm struggling to pin the failure on anything but an assembly error, I.e bolts insufficiently torqued at the factory.

The hole in the block is filled too but I'll get some pics of that tomorrow, I made a plate out of aluminium that just about tapped in the hole, then used the belzona 1111 to build up behind it and over the top. But I intend to build up more around it tomorrow. It's worked out quite well.

The crank is pretty knackered. It's worse than hoped but hey ho, s
t happens. I'm now looking into replacement cranks, there's a few for sale. I think I'll try and price up a repair too but it will be expensive considering the amount of welding required before it can be re ground.
