What a wonderful afternoon I had yesterday ......

...... driving my dear old 911 through the narrow twisty slippery salt crusted minor and B roads in Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and the North Cotswolds.
Pure driving nirvana and I doubt anywhere did I get above 80, in fact I probably rarely got above 50 on the very minor ones. Very little traffic on the roads, and Radar Love (amongst others) on ITunes.
Little grip, freezing temperatures and lovely keep her in third at around 4K revs on the narrower twistier bits, ready for a quick surge in power if and where possible. Just a bit of decent foot control and a little rev matching equals an intoxicating driving connection with the car, I just can't believe you would find in a modern 500HP with all the gizmos ....... and it was all at minor speeds. Lovely.
I'm kind of glad my dear old 993 isn't worth zillions. I still truly do love driving her, and in all weather conditions.
I'm still a mad and bad biker, so age isn't a factor in my pleasure yesterday in driving slow. Just sometimes, less is more.

This is going to make me sound like an a
hole, so I apologise, but I completely back off when I feel like there's any risk of losing grip on a public road. Do people feel more in control and I'm over-estimating how quickly it can be lost? Love driving them high in the revs in 3rd though

^^^ Doesn't matter how old you are, it's still a great tune
I agree with cmoose on the skinny tyres element. Was out in the Cotswold B roads and minor roads yesterday in the GT4 on Cup 2s and although it was fun, I think I would have had even more fun in my 987.1 CS on 18"s and PS2s. Better steering and more feel!

This is a contributory factor in the rise in demand for certain classic cars, especially some Porsches.
The ability to go for a drive and feel exactly what the car is doing, within generally legal speeds, is very satisfying.
Turbos/PDK/electric steering/stability management systems/huge wheels - all contribute to sanitise the experience. Even your granny could drive the latest models at licence losing speeds.

as I learnt on here recently, next time you can lock the car whilst leaving the front boot open then disconnect the battery & shut the boot. That way the car is fully locked (albeit not alarmed) and your battery isn't being drained. When you get back from the hol, it'll unlock with your key then reconnect the battery & you're off....Gassing Station | Porsche Classics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
