Bottom Bracket Size

After taking out my previous bottom bracket I measured it all up ready to get a replacement then binned it.

Stupidly I now can't remember the measurements and need to order the new one. Is there a way of working out what size I need?

It's a Peugeot Europa from the late 80s but with a more modern 9 speed cassette on the back. I'm planning on going to a single ring on the front too, presumably that might make a difference to the chainline?

Assuming it is a square taper BB you are getting, it could be a case of trial and error with different sizes. Different chainsets require different BB axle widths, so the fact you threw away your old one is probably of no consequence!

If the new chainset does not specify which BB axle width it requires, then it might be worth getting a bike shop to do it. They should have most sizes of BB in stock and can work out which one gives the optimum chain line.

Hmm I was hoping that wouldn't be the answer!

Will try and get hold of some old bottom brackets for some initial trial and error then.

Problem solved, the chainset I think I will go with recommends a size.
