Me and the missus went out for a curry at our favorite restaurant. Forty really isn't that big a deal. Whatever you do I hope you enjoy it.

Night at The Shard (no doubt others will have their preference) 2mins from London Bridge Tube so you can get around a couple of the museums/galleries. View from the top is great if it's a clear day.

Gaucho Grill round the corner for a nice steak in the afternoon then out for a show in the evening. Visit HMS Belfast the next day before you go home.

I don't normally celebrate my birthday, but my 40th happened to land straight in the middle of Glastonbury weekend, back when you could still easily get tickets. It was my first time there, which was pretty bloody special.

I think it was more about the experience there though, rather than it being my birthday. I think I even tried to keep it quiet, but it got out and my mates made a fuss about it.

You could take your Mrs up the Oxo Tower.

Or maybe your mates could take you up the Oxo Tower and take your Mrs along for the ride too?

Cocaine and Hookers.

Plenty to do in London either that or do a weekend break.

I ran the Buxton 40 mile ultra on my 40th, it was a bet with a mate, dreading my 50th!

Me and the wife went up to London on my 40th (actually it was a few months later, I was supposed to go on my 40th but my dad died 11 days beforehand so I wasn't really in the mood so it was rescheduled, the hotel were great as they moved our non moveable booking due to the circumstances), we booked to eat at Heston Blumenthal's Dinner, arrived all excited to find that there had been a power issue and the kitchen was shut, they had tried to get hold of us, however the contact number that my wife gave them when booking was her old one!

Ended up eating at The Cinnamon Club in Westminster, which was fantastic.

Still not eaten at Dinner, I'm 42 tomorrow.

My wife had a party for her 40th, she shared it with her best friend as it was her 50th around the same time, I couldn't think of anything worse than a party, plus it would be a crap party as I don't have many friends.

Is that the new name for the high peak challenge? That hurts.

Krakow or Prague etc, if your willing to spend up to £600 might aswell have an interesting city break somewhere new plus it will be much cheaper than London once you are there

£500 should get your wife and children a nice weekend break somewhere. Leaving you with £100 which is more than enough to cover beers and takeaways while you enjoy the greatest 40th gift possible, a slumming weekend reminiscent of one's bachelor days.

Certainly no reason at all to use Gaucho these days when there is a Hawksmore.

Leg it to the Cotswolds. Probably some reasonable post Christmas lull hotel discounts available. The Swan in Bibiry has been chucking out rooms at half price this week and there at probably others.

That budget should get you a night or two in Hotel 41: https://www.41hotel.com/ By far my favorite hotel in London as they have an amazing attention to detail. I took the Mrs there for her 40th, we went and saw a show on her birthday, we happened to mention in passing where we were going to one of the staff, when we got back to the room we had a signed photo from the cast of the show waiting for us.

For my 40th I had a day at Mercedes World driving the AMG Black Series c63, that was good fun. Plenty of the big marques run driving experience days if you don't fancy driving a Merc. Or for something completely different you could go to one of Land Rovers driving centres.
