Gen 2 Cayman S or gen1 997s?

Evening all. I'm fully aware of the potential issues with gen 1 997s but have always wanted one. Can't yet stretch to a gen 2 without selling my m3 and that's a keeper. However, head over heart is telling me I'd be better off with a newer 2009 gen 2 cayman s than a 2005/6 Carrera or Carrera s unless one with a recent reputable engine rebuild came up. The car will be toy number 2 and not a daily. Keen to hear views from those that have driven or owned both. The car will be used for road tours and fast B road driving in Peak District and North Wales. Thanks in advance. I've yet to drive either.

The cars feel/drive quite differently in my opinion and it might well be the case that you will instantly prefer one of them to the other if you can take looks and heritage out of the equation. I preferred the Cayman, but I was pretty sure of my decision before driving both!
What model of M3 do you have? Reason I ask is that I have an M3 and a Cayman S and think they are really good contrasts with each other. Used to have an E46, which I sold to get the Cayman, and now have an E90 alongside the Cayman. The E90 is more different to the Cayman than the E46 would have been, so my advice would be: if you have an E90/E92/E93 M3, definitely consider the Cayman S.
You're right to be concerned about the potential for engine woes on the gen 1 997 but I would suggest that it shouldn't of itself stop you from buying one. I suspect that many, many cars are fine. I know it's not the same engine but my gen 1 Cayman S has so far been fine for 93,000 miles.

Cheers chaps. E36 which has tweaked diff, suspension and brakes. V quick and handles brilliantly. I've got a newish Megane 275 cup s with ohlins and akroprovic exhaust as my daily but plan to swap that for another golf R 5 door. My Mrs will drive that as a Daily. She wouldnt drive the Megane else we'd keep it. I plan to buty a skoda Octavia Vrs daily for duties and holiday hack but add some pork to the fleet.
Thumbs up for a rebuilt 997 but they are few and far between. My thinking is I could run a Cayman for 2 years then trade up to a gen 2 Carrera. I'll be closely watching the market for a properly built 997.

Nice fleet! I suspect you'll miss the Megane after it has gone, sounds lovely in that spec.
Good luck with your decisions - your plan for the Cayman S and then perhaps a 997.2 is probably what I'd do. It gives you the option to keep the Cayman if you decide the 997 isn't actually what you're looking for from a driving perspective.
