There is a road in a town close to where I live, where the daffodils have been blooming over the last week or two. It brightens my day as I drive past this springful colour each morning on the way to work. It’s hard to verbalise, but it makes life that bit more enjoyable when there is a beautiful fluster of yellow adorning the edge of the road.
Well, this morning as I drove by I noticed that some chav and his mate (presumably) had trampled on the lot of them.
What is the point of that? What enjoyment did some low IQ’d dickhead get out of that? It makes me sick that there are people around who get a kick out of such mindless crap. I’d love to catch em and force them to work in the community planting flowers in a fetching “Guantanamo orange” uniform, with the words “dregs of society” printed in big black letters.

Why do they do alot of things-why do they vandalise peoples cars, kick the cr*p out of someone for the sake of it?.
If it makes you feel better Strebbe-probably your taxes over the years have paid for their upbringing.
I have never been able to comprehend senseless vandelism.

We used to have loads and loads of bluebells growing on our front garden... they used to look lovely. That was until one year someobody came along and PICKED THEM ALL. Now they don't grow (they were wild). What's worse is that I caught her doing it and she still didn't stop and infact came back and did it again.
Yes. We have a similar array of daffs growing on the main road and you do occasionally find that some "hardman" has kicked them all over.
The problem here is lack of respect. They dont respect something because they see it as inferior to themselves,something they can impose themselves on, yet by acting the way they do, they prove themselves to be the inferior ones.
Ill bet you a pound to a penny theyd not kick the lions in the safari park.....well...only once would they do it.

I used to be quite bad myself, more mischevious than plain nasty, in my teens. Im sure it boiled down to lack of direction, nothing special in my life for which I had worked, or was working to, an abyss guessing what the future might hold so very much lack of direction. I didnt thrive on vandalism, but I certainly had anti social behaviour issues which manifested themselves in the form of doing things for attention, or fun.
Theres hope for everyone, teenage years arn't a bed of roses for everyone, and some of us take to stomping upon them rather than enjoying them before growing up later in life.
I turned out ok in the end

I thought wild bluebells were a protected species?Although I don't suppose that would have stopped her.

noooo, they should be forced to wear pretty little yellow flowery hats in the style of daffodils and then buried in the said plot of land, up to their necks for at least one week.
the other local thugs can then come by, jeering, and kicking their fellow yobs in the head, such is their peer group mutual respect.

This kind of thing really makes me mad. I live in a sleepy Wiltshire village and the local kids went through a spate of vandalising things, throwing eggs at cars and suchlike. Most of it was pretty harmless but one day someone placed some big flower tubs in the village and filled them with nice flowers. That very night the local kids pulled up all the flowers, threw them all over the road and left the tubs empty. I mean why? Why spoil it? I'm no flower lover really but its just senseless.

What about being rational then?
As far as I can tell, the issue here is some trampled flowers, not poeple snatching handbags from old ladies or stealing from peoples houses.
And in any case, when has anything ever been any different anywhere? Admittedly, I'm young, but as far back as I can remember there have always been selfish, uncaring people in the world who are perfectly happy taking from others for their personal gain.
Generally however, things aren't that bad. I've been held at knife point for £20 and a crap mobile phone, and I've had a gun pulled on me by an off-his-face crack head at Swiss Cottage station, but on the whole my life is good. I live in a nice house, and I drive a nice car, and I make decent money and I'm pretty comfortable leading my life.
In other parts of the world, however, there are people who do not even lead lives to speak of - Theirs is simply a strruggle to survive. I'm not a particularly compassionate or caring person, but I can see that that is hardship, and that's a sh*t country.
We do not live in a sh*t country. It has its problems, yes, but on the whole we all live pretty good lives, and to be quite frank I'm getting sick of the constant futile whinging that goes on...

Though I agree with part of your message-we do still live (in parts) in a nice country-people are entitled to draw unfavourable comparisons with the rest of the developed world due to the high rates of crime here.
People are also entitled to draw unfavourable comparisons with the past. If you go back a mere 40 years you had alot lower crime rates and also alot lower welfare dependency.
Society has lost its decency.
This has not happened overnight but has been a slow gradual process that has slipped by unnoticed.
Its saddening.
As for kids will be kids I disagree.
I and I imagine a few other PH'ers had a bit of a wild youth but I would never have invested the time to trample flowers. There is nothing to be gained and its an entirely pointless pursuit.

Agreed!!-All I used to do is decapitate stinging nettles-It was my way of gaining revenge.

Kids have been trampling flowers, pulling the legs off spiders and doing other destructive things for centuries! The only difference is that this time, you didn't like it.
If everyone took that attitude it would probably result in the entire breakdown of law and order in the country. The fact is, my kids don't go trampling on flowers because they've been raised to respect property and people. Indeed, all my kids love the beauty of nature, be that flowers, rivers, mountains, trees, etc.. This is because as their Mum and Dad my wife and I have invested in their characters by raising them in a disciplined, yet loving, environment.
If my kds went around trampling on flowers and pulling the legs of spiders, I'd be ashamed at how we'd raised them.
Clearly the issue is complex, deep-rooted and hard to change. It primarily relates to parenting (or lack of it). My wife and I took the attitude that the kids' characters are moulded by us primarily up to the age of five or six. If kids reach their teenage years having never been loved or disciplined, it is asking an awful lot of society to change them. However, society must rise to the challenge of this and not, as you suggest, simply say "it's just kids being kids".

Here's a little food for thought for you all.
Today I went to seek counselling for my 10 year old Daughter, I am in no doubt she desperately needs this help, and really the whys are not important.
However, there is no such service available via the NHS, only a Mental Health referral, now as it happens, my Daughter symptoms mean she is able to seek an urgent referral via the Mental Health team.
Now, I have no objection in principal to paying for private counselling, but I need to live off my savings and having alrady spent 9k only legal services, and still not having secured a permanent resolution which means I keep my home, I need to be careful, but which is the greater priority, a home or my Daughters health? Of course it's my Daughters health, but if I were to add homelessness into the equation this would make matters worse for her.
I believe that I come from a well educated, well mannered background, I can say with my hand on my heart that I have brought my children up with good values, and yet I can sit here and see all that slipping away, if my Daughter doesn't get the help she needs.
Then I look around me, and I see many families to whom life has dealt a cruel blow, and I wonder how many of them need help and can't get it, and then I wonder if these children are left with no help, no support, then what symptoms would they display?
