I am selling my watch - I've had some ok trade bids but looking to see if a private sale is worth the hassle.....

Couple Questions (thanks in advance)

1. There appears to be a real shortage of private sales on Chron24, is it the cost that puts private sellers off, or simply is it dominated by dealers ?? Having had a quick look through the site it appears you have to pay £115 upfront to sell - is it worth it ??

2. Ive been asked if I have all the links, I remember it came with some spare which I had added (so no more spares now) I am not a particularly powerfully built guy.....can anyone confirm how many it should have come with...photo of bracelet below...(more in the piston heads add)

I'm kind of new to the more "expensive" watches, bought a used seadweller recently, but was from a well known dealer. Again, maybe because I'm not a great expert, but buying privately would make me very nervous.

Slight drift: do ADs offer an authenticity check service?

Good question, I don't know.

But I was in a Rolex dealer once when a private buyer and seller came in wanting to get a Rolex watch verified. The dealer politely declined.

Afterwards he said to me 'why would I? If I say it's real and it is, I get nothing worth having out of it. If I say it's real and I'm mistaken I get sued. If I say it's fake I get abused by the seller, who probably believes that it is real. All far more hassle than it's worth, even if we charged a small amount for doing it'.

My ex-AD will verify whether a watch is genuine. I think they charge £40 for an insurance valuation which would obviously include it, they only need to pop the back off to check.

I did it when I brought in my Rolex Cellini from Italy.

When I used to live in London I sold a Rolex privately, myself & the buyer met at Rolex on old bond street and they were happy to authenticate. I had checked with them before hand and they knew me reasonably well (from browsing, not buying!) and were happy to help out.

What year/age is it? and does it have box and papers?

Curious, as i'm pretty sure you'll get more private, but its the 'trust' element of it really for both you and the buyer.

I find watchfinders offers insulting these days.

Wouldn`t sell to them now.

Yes they used bid really well but it's got weaker and weaker the bigger their company has got.

You can still occasionally get a good deal with a PX if the watches involved suit them, but it's a bit rare to find.

I'm selling my Rolex GMT Master II and watchfiner have given me a really strong offer, just a couple of hundred less that what I would sell privately. I think private buyers are few and far between who want to buy from another private individual.

No, mine isn't a coke bezel. 2012 black ceramic bezel.

Though I may sell a watch to watchfinder I wouldn't purchase one as they're incredibly expensive. You can get a great deal on ebay or chrono24 IF you know what you are looking for. I particularly like the search function on chrono as it allows you to search exactly what you're looking for.

Just seen your add. The fact that your watch is badly beaten up, especially the bracelet, and more importantly you have no warranty info or receipt I strongly advise you to send it off to RSC for a full service and while its there get a brand new Pepsi insert installed. You may get your current asking price after.

Your watch is not "badly beaten up" its just been worn which is what they are designed for, so ignore that rediculous comment. I looked at your ad a few times and concluded that I would need to send it for a service on receipt which could easily eat up £600 if done by Rolex and then the watch became less interesting due to the lack of original paperwork. The advice above is that you should do just this, spend £600 or so (maybe more if you buy a bezel) and then you could maybe reach your £4.1k (you would get more with the RSC paperwork) which even a six year old could work out isnt sensible when you say you have been offered just under 4k as it stands. Providing you are confident of getting that offer i.e. they have seen and inspected the watch as many buyers always "assume that the watch is perfect when we make our offer" I would take the cash. Otherwise try Ebay, apart from an early sale many years ago on PH I have never had a succesful sale on here so dont judge the lack of a sale based on success or otherwise here.
Good luck

Time for an update - me thinks biggrin

watch went off to a local Rolex dealer for a couple of days, for them to check over, including accuracy (which they use as a judge of service requirements etc)

It now on Sale or Return with them at £5k - with my asking price being returned to me. (Minimum commitment is I keep it with them for 1 month if it dosen't sell, I can collect it, with zero charge to me)

...best real bid I had was £3,700 and a few at £3,500 (both trade and private)

contrary to advice above they said ...
no need for service - (it keeps great accurate time and movements work fine)
nothing but the light polish required on the bracelet (they will do FOC)
don't change any bits
