Mazda 6 v Merc C Class Estate

So, I've narrowed down my search for a new family/commute wagon to ~2013 models of the above.

Quite a strange choice to compare maybe but I don't have confidence in any VAG product and BMWs don't do it for me.

Does anyone have any views on the merits of each?

Sounds a bit of a strange choice to come to, but interestingly enough I got my own search down to the same shortlist a wee while ago. As it happened, I couldn't find a decent example of either at the right price (plenty of rotten cheap sheds while the good ones were well over the average price) and I ended up with a Volvo V70xc with a lovely grumbly 5 cylinder engine instead. One of my favourite cars ever.
