3000S - good thing or bad?

Reliability is directly proportional to the quality of the car you buy and how well you maintain it or have it maintained. If you check the car out thoroughly(or have a specialist check it out for you), that is a start. These are usually very reliable cars. I've been driving older TVRs(Pre-90's) for almost 30 years and have found them to be pretty reliable cars overall.
I believe that Martin Lilley's original prototype was made in around 73/74. I used to own one of the two production prototypes which differs from the production models as access to the boot was via the parcel shelf. When I had it the wheels had been changed and it had been resprayed Blue from the original white.
At that time the car was tired but still quick,it was difficult to place accurately on the road due to the low seating position.
Who knows it may be the same car.

Is it the one at HHC?
If so, its had a lot of refurbishment, and you get the benefits of buying from a dealer.
We've had a few 3000s over the years, and top down and screens off, they an excellent convertible.
Respectable performance and solid predictable handling.
I'm sure you would enjoy the ownership experience.

Aye, that's the one. Tony at HHC said the thing's been rebuilt so it's like new. Trouble is I've been gifted a 2.8V6 S1, which I thought was dead. It needs £100 spending on it to get it's MOT so it looks like I won't need to shell out. I'll see how it runs before I consider the 3000s.
Re the colour change - the HPi on it said it used to be black and white - but is now Bright Red. Hmmm....

Rob, your car was one of three very early cars, (pre-production) that were made without boots and were sold by TVR to a hire company in Lexham Mews, London SW1. In 1981, the blue car was owned by a guy who lived round the corner to me in Woodford Green, Essex. He had it resprayed from white and had different wheels, from what I recall.
The one that Hexham have was an even earlier car and you can clearly see the TR6 rear lamps, as opposed to the Lucas/Scimitar units that the production 3000Ss had. Nothing wrong with the car as far as I know and I do know that Tony wouldn't sell it if it wasn't genuine.
TVR must have re-registered it in 1978, hence the S suffix. I have a 3000S that is a March 1981 car (according to the logbook) although it was built in 1979, went to the USA, sat in the FBI compound for 18 months, then was shipped back to TVR.

John, TVR knowledge isn't dross, it's.... well, ok, dross if you like, but I didn't get to where I am today by learning nuffink

It never leaked water when it rained and it took three TVR employees two years to get it to consistantly leak, a feat sucessfully repeated on all production cars. I recall it being sold to a Harry Johnson in Warwickshire in the late 1970s/early 80s.

I love the 3000S's I had a very early one that had gone back to the factory to have a boot fitted, got lost and finally got registered in 81, I believe it was the number 2 car.
The only trouble I had was the offset pedals with me being 6'3" and size 11 feet.
I was warned though that the screen frames rot and getting another Jensen Healey frame cut down would have been a nightmare and probably impossible
