These are very basic matters when it comes to patent applications, and if you really don't know what they are I would stop right now as your specification will not be drafted corrected.

I suggest you contact the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and book one of their free advice sessions. Details at http://www.cipa.org.uk/need-advice/ip-clinics/

indeed

does 'abstract' in this sense mean the same as it would with regard to an academic paper , thesis or dissertation ?

The abstract outlines what it is/does/is for, and then the claims (of which there are usually many!) drill down into the detail of what makes your invention/innovation novel. It is the breadth of these claims that provide you with protection.

What did you expect? You ask an obvious question which five seconds with Google could have answered.

One further word of advice, it may be an idea to improve your spelling and grammar before completing the patent application form.

Good luck.

If you do bother coming back, you were given very sensible advice to seek professional advise. To stand a chance, your application must be well drafted. You can't just change or add stuff willy nilly later. There are no second chances.

Also you should get advice as to where to file and where you want protection.

Ignore this and you will not stand a chance.

You decide to apply for a patent without professional help, presumably to save on cost, and ask a technical question about two of the foundation concepts to such an application. And you ask on a motoring forum. If there was anyone able to provide the answer there's a very good chance it's because they're a professional patent attorney whose advice you're not prepared to pay for but would like to financially benefit from.

And you throw the toys from the pram when someone suggests you'd be better talking to a professional. I hope you had your best Council Compo face on whilst you were typing that.

I agree, especially as the OP didn;t appear to understand what an 'abstract' is in regard to a piece of formal writing ...

I sympathise, you asked a perfectly simple question and the usual moaners and bds didn't lift a finger to help you. Same thing happened when I asked about DIY dentistry. I had a perfectly good dremel with some glass drilling bits and some two pack bumper filler from the garage for the filling and the fking bd dentists all told me to go to the dentist ! Not one of them would give me ANY advice about saving a few quid and doing it myself.

Exactly.

Given the OP's lack of basic knowledge, illiteracy and attitude it would appear unlikely that any invention of his would be worth patenting, in any case.

Agreed. There's a very good reason why engineering companies that produce IP generally have a specialist patent attorney. Trying to write claims without a good knowledge of the process will end up with the world and his wife copying your idea. And if you have to ask on PH because you don't know what you're doing, that ought to tell you something. A reply saying "here's where you can get free, professional advice" seems like the most helpful thing anyone could have posted.

Judging by the OP's response, I have a feeling their application might have ended up here anyway...

Got confused, went mad, lost the will to live? No wait, thats my response to reading them. I would suggest reading some other patents to see how they're structured to use as a basis if you're determined to go it alone.

Exactly! The language is peculiar to patents (pah-tent, not pay-tent). Things are attached 'screwably' or 'slideably' to quote just one. The claims are about the novelty of the invention, and the abstract is a précis of the body text to put it simply. One must read lots of patents, go to the science library to dig out prior art, and write the text so that someone 'skilled in the art' can follow it. My application was only ever meant to be a provisional which gives the inventor a year (at the time I wrote mine) to develop the invention and consult patent agents for a definitive application if it proves to look worthwhile. Something a lot of people don't realise is that copyright is much stronger than a lot of patents and is automatically in force if certain precautions are taken. It does not only apply to music and literature, it is vested in drawings too. Oh, and tell nobody about your provisional application without a water-tight secrecy agreement! The trouble is that if your idea gets ripped off (as mine was) you need deep pockets to pursue the offender. Mine proved to be a dead duck when the rip-off company tried to market it through a mail order outlet in Finchley. I had Innovations Catalogue lined up for mine at a price of £9.99. Made in a friendly factory in Taiwan in large numbers it would have cost pennies. I occasionally still use the prototypes, and recall vividly a meeting I had with Paddy Hopkirk in his kitchen as part of the evaluation process. The full patent application must be correctly drafted, and preferably covered internationally where applicable. Big Bucks!

Why do you put spaces in between your punctuation marks? Weird.
