Weird one this one. Just wondering if anyone might have any thoughts.

I sometimes get a terrible feeling of itching, basically all over my body. But here's the thing, it only itches in one place at one time. So one moment the back of my thigh will be very irritated then that will stop and it might become the back of my neck & then that will stop and it might become an arm. The only thing that is regular is that it always starts at the back of my head where it always very bad and I feel I want to pull my hair out and goes on from there. I don't think its an allergy because I'm very conservative in my eating and I certainly couldn't pin it down to anything I have had before the scratching starts. A few other things;

1.) Not bed bugs have checked.
2.) Not head lice. Have had them before so have checked.
3.) Yes I do bathe regularly but no I haven't changed my soap, shampoo or aftershave. Its all the same stuff.
4.) Not really under stress and certainly nowhere near the level that I was a few years ago.

The only thing I would add in this last occurrence is that it seems to be coupled in with a small outbreak of zits that have appeared on my face at the same time. I have had shingles before so don't think its that but at the moment, baffled.

Er... any thoughts?

This is a bit of a leftfield suggestion but it has helped me with my undiagnosed itching over the past few years...

Have you exercised much recently? I find that if I haven't got a good sweat on for a long time I start to become very itchy in random places; the itching tends to ease when it is cooler. After excising though and dripping sweat, the itching goes away near instantly. It stays away if I continue exercising but comes back within a week if I don't.

HHmmmm..... that's interesting. scratchchin

I have just started doing a bit more exercising but not really all that strenuous. I'm walking at least three miles a day and every other day I'm doing a selection of sit-ups and press ups. Not a new years resolution and hardly Muscle Beach but I'm going to a wedding with a lot of very toned guests in the summer and I'm working very hard not to be the only lardy bloke in the photos.

So I'm getting the sweat pores open but just not very much that's all. smile

You mention soap, does this include your clothes and sheets? - made that mistake once.. now I keep to the main brands / skin friendly stuff.

Nope use all the normal brands for my washing. Might change to a hypo-allergic one if I can find one.

Its not psychological is it? Unnoticed stress that you're relieving buy seemingly being itchy resulting in a compulsion to scratch?

I get odd itchy spots - shins are the worst because it does not take much scratching to make them bleed!

I find slapping on some E45 itch relief cream relieves it for long enough to break the scratching cycle.

Itchy skin is one sign of kidney disease and probably many other things that are far less serious.

I used to scratch all the time and thought the problem was probably just dry skin, the wrong washing powder or soap, but then I was diagnosed with an autoimmune kidney disease. My kidney function had fallen dramatically, I was told I was at the chronic end of things but fortunately loads of tablets, including a high dose of steroids, resulted in a substantial improvement to my kidney function. It was during this treatment that the itching stopped.
