Hi everyone,

hope it's the right section.

Bought a car last March (Honda Civic 2.2, 10 plate) with the inclusion of an RAC Gold Warranty. The car had a few tiny issues (no locking wheel nuts and unbalanced wheels) and was fixed for around £40 and an hour of my time. I chalked it up to experience and continued.

Fast forward a few months, I've had a squeaky clutch pedal and clicking (a common problem with Civics/Accords of the era) and is linked a failing Master Clutch cylinder. I called the RAC to find that no warranty had ever been taken out on the car. The Master Clutch cylinder is covered by RAC Gold. I called the supplying garage and was told to expect a call back - this didn't happen.

Called up again 2 weeks later and was told there no warranty, however, follow the same process as the RAC (get it diagnosed, get a quote) and he'll have a look at it.

Comes to December, I get the car diagnosed at my expense of £50 and a quotation of work to be completed - £275.

Emailed the chap, sent the quote over. He said he can get it fixed with his garage for £75 all in. The issue? It's a 100 mile round trip to the garage and I'm working full time 9-5 and have no way to get this looked at.

Should I accept the £75 'fix' he's offering and spend an hour each way to this garage?
Do I push for £75 to be put towards Honda fixing it?
Do I push towards a higher figure as the warranty that should have been included in the first place hasn't been?
Do I chalk it up to experience, maintain a lower blood pressure and sack off the repair?

I know these 'warranties' are sketchy at best, however it looks like (from the garage's Facebook page) that this isn't the first time they've not included a warranty.

Any help would be advised.

The point about distance is immaterial. It's not his fault you live 100 miles away and chose to buy a car from him. (sorry if this sounds harsh but it's a fact)

If he is offering to fix it using his garage then you have little to go on.

Can he offer you a courtesy car for a day - drop it off one night, pick up next night?

what about the fact he was sold an RAC warranty and should he have a problem could take it to any garage. Could be one of the reason why he bought the car, knowing he would not need to take it back.

As said above he has offered to resolve it for you.

However the issue is more that it was supposed to have an RAC Warranty but didn't.

The warranty, however, is pretty worthless as you surmise.

If you bought it and the RAC warranty was specified at the time but not been supplied you could ask to be reimbursed for the RAC warranty fee - a Trading Standards issue.

You might want to negotiate with the supplier i.e. he pays you the £75 and the RAC fee or he agrees in writing for you to get it repaired locally.

You could also request he covers the cost of transporting the car to his repairer as its not 'roadworthy' and your insurers won't cover you as you know of a fault (!)

Do you have any proof the warranty was to be included in the sale?

I am also wondering why, 10 months after purchase, you are only just realizing you do not have the warranty? Surely you should chase it up when you did not receive any paperwork in the first week or two after purchase?

I'm being pragmatic.

Also, OP, has the part actually failed, or is it just worn?

They have a general exclusion for "any failure of parts which have reached the end of their normal working lives because of age or mileage" which is possible on a 6/7 year old car?

Thanks for the replies so far everyone.

As for the distance to the dealer, the warranty was to cover any issues.

Car came with an RAC breakdown package and the warranty one was to follow. Did not chase up as the dealer was being an arse.

Part is worn and would not be covered by RAC warranty but the more pressing issue is that the warranty was not included.

Website states all cars come with it, was detailed in advert and still states they are an RAC authorised dealer on their Facebook page.

Chances are that the Warranty wouldn't cover the master cylinder until it actually fails, I had this recently with a Qashqai with a third party warranty and a noisy wheel bearing.
