Are people with drink problems fked up because they drink or drink because they are fked up?

I think this is far too complicated an issue to simplify, but the latter may well have caused the former, and it self perpetuates from there.....

I know a lot of misfits and fk ups, I'm yet to meet anyone who was completely happy and balanced until they discovered booze one day and completely lost the plot.

I know people who were fully functioning decent human beings, found recreational drugs and sadly they proved enough to make a manageable problem/trait unmanageable and they lost the plot.

With Booze, the problem always came first. 6 pints, half a bottle of Spirit, 2 bottles of Baileys for the truly demented, whatever and you just stop caring about your problems, you can laugh them off, but the next day they come back twice as bad and booze is one of those things when you have to take more and more to reach the same level.

In my experience, truly happy people rarely drink to excess (past about 25 anyway) you find your limit when it's fun and you won't waste a day in bed, it's unhappy people who drink themselves to oblivion.

You're overlooking the fact thst alcohol has addictive properties, just like nicotine, or class A drugs. It is possible to suffer an addiction without being "fked up".

I've gone through a hellish 3 1/2 years, broke up from my sons mother, lost the privilege of seeing my son daily, lovely family home, nice car, met someone else and it recently went south too.

I know I've increased my alcohol intake recently due to the recent split, when I split from my sons mother it went up, but evened itself out to a similar level as before the split. This time it's worse than ever.

I'm not an alcoholic, I don't drink daily and can take or leave a beer, but when I start it usually ends up messy!!!

So in my case I think I became fked up slightly and a little more so after hitting the beer

Mate of mine from my first job recently died, 49, just literally pissed his life away. Nice bloke but always thought that underneath it all he was unhappy about something.

The alcoholic may have deep seated anxieties and fears that he's afraid to confront. Alcohol may be a way of self-medicating. Turned to the bottle as way of finding comfort? It's sad.

You may want to rethink that first part of your sentence! It starts with denial!

I like a drink too wink

Both, but not necessarily at the same time or in the that order.

And people who say they are not an alcoholic often turn out to be an alcoholic drunk

Well I know a guy with severe arthritis who can't hold his drink.

Hence my question! It could also be the one where you simply fall down after too many pints.

Come on OP - which one are you referring to/

Some people drink because they are poets. Some of us drink because we're NOT poets.

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive..."

I think alcohol has almost magical properties, that first pint on a hot day, that brandy on a dark evening by the fire, but thing is, the magic is short and fleeting, and like with all drugs, there is a payback.

People chase that magic, they think they can summon up good times that were enhanced by a few drinks by getting plastered on a Tuesday night, on their own, they go looking for it every night and before they know it, they need it just to get the normality they were trying to escape.

As a species, we are both blessed and cursed that this compound has this beguiling effect on us, it causes so much joy, but probably an equal amount of untold misery, violence and deprivation.

It is wonderful stuff but we need to realise that like food, and many other pleasures we arent designed to have it all the time in vast quantities, you turn into an alcoholic, it costs a fortune, you get fat and then, worst of all you end up where you arent allowed any, at all, ever. We get so used to it, it is so routine and normal, it isnt a treat or a pleasure any more, it is a habit.

The trouble is we have enough money (generally) to get more than we will ever need, huge packs of everything, stick one in the shopping each week, 18 cans of beer, couple of bottles of wine, then there is the pub, I go in every week or two and can predict who will be in, the same folk having the same five pints they have every night, they kind of have to now, it is as predictable as going into a tavern in Skyrim where the Non Player Characters are there, system generated, coded in it feels like, that is until you see a flyer on the wall for the funeral for one of them, dead at 58, mainly down to his love of drink.

it needs treating with respect I think is what I am saying, we have all this "Wine o Clock", "Cheeky Pint" bks, we need to remember it is a powerful drug and we should always remember that, if it were invented now, it wouldnt be legal and to be honest I think Cannabis is probably less harmful but our society and culture is so built around booze.
