I am a locum vet, I have a limited company.

I have always insured the car for primarily business use.

I have only worked at 2 different practices in the last 2 years and plan to continue working at the same 2 practices.

I take it that social and commuting wouldn't cover me even if I used it to go to only 1 of the practices?

Thanks, James

If you don't make house calls or hospital visits in it then I would think at most you should need class 1 business, probably commuting will cover you, phone and ask your insurance company.

SDP+Commuting would allow you to go to ONE place of work. If you needed to go to another during the day or start at another that would require business use.

Considering theres usually pennies of difference between SDPC and Class 1 I would get it to be safe

To add business class one to my car cost an extra £15

As said above, basic business use costs next to nothing extra.

I think Direct Line don't charge anything at all for it.

I have never paid any extra for B1 use for myself and wife on our cars.

Slightly off track, but am I alone in finding that premiums take a massive leap if one's annual mileage exceeds 20,000?
On topic, I have full business use on my daily driver as a Chartered Accountant, and my premiums are no worse than on our other cars.

It has always made very little difference in the past but just about to buy a second hand X5 40d and the premiums shoot up from under £500 to £1250...

Tbh, it's main job will be purely social, but it would be nice to be able to use it to go to work if the other car's in the garage etc...

It's also cheaper to keep it on the road over night, we have only one space on the drive so the cars take it in turns to be on the drive. Would it then not be covered if it was stolen from the drive even if it's normally kept on the road?

Thanks, James

261 bhp, 3.0 diesel I assume - no idea why BMW confusingly called it the 4.0D.
Time to shop around for your insurance.
Also, are you asking for full business use or just the occasional commute, and what annual mileage are you suggesting?
Of course, in certain cities recent BMWs are prime theft targets - do you live in one?

306 bhp 3 litre diesel, 62 plate, it's the slightly higher tune version of the 35d I think...

No, live in a rural village in Dorset with no crime to speak of...

Annual mileage will only be 10-12K with 2K of business. 15 years no claims, with 3 on the other car...

It may be just unlucky that previous people with the same specific risk profile as me have had high claims...

I did the usual confused.com and then phoned a couple of brokers also...

Hmmmn, thanks for the input, think I'll call the insurers and have them clarify.

Ok, there's the value of the vehicle to factor in, which must be around the £20k+ mark.
But my insurance on a much older Volvo XC90 2.9T6 is under £400 for 18,000 miles a year, most of them business.
I live just outside Newark on a Trent, so I would have thought similar residential risk profile to yourself.
Car kept on the drive overnight as far as they are concerned - nowhere on the form to say its behind an electric gate.
Similar driving record, 10 years no claims, no penalty points.

If you need a broker, try Classic Line. I came across them because I have a classic car, but they have insured my other cars cost effectively. 01455 639000.

Spoke to the insurance company and they take it mean literally that. Travelling to a single place of work, can't nominate a single place though...

Came in at under £400 in the end, but SDP only so just won't use it for work...
