Anyone own a Canton ?
Discussion
I'm looking to de clutter & replace my old basic Yamaha receiver & speakers with something simple without wires everywhere .
I have been looking at a canton as idt seems to tick all the boxes with the looks , simplicity & the reviews read good too.
Anyone own one or advise on something similar or better for around the £350.00 budget ?
Looking for something to go with my 55' w series 2 year old Sony TV

The sound base?
If so, I found that the voices were a bit quiet and upping the volume upped everything and so was no use. I looked online and it seems that other people have found the same thing. There's a thread running on the Canton website about it.
This was over a year ago on a DM50 or DM75 I think. Might just have been me, but I got rid in the end.

I've got a Canton DM9. It is utterly brilliant, sounds quality is excellent. I use it for FLAC music, Movies and normal TV. Very clear voice and good level of bass. I didn't want a sound bar with an additional sub woofer so this was a perfect match. I had a Philips sound bar before and I tried a few others including a Panasonic for similar money but this by far had the better sound and build quality. The only thing that I never seemed to get to work is the Bluetooth playback, but as I've never needed it no such biggie.

I've a canton dm75 sound base , it's a beast and replaces a surround set up with small sub easily.
Bonus being if you need more bass, unlikely , you can add a subwoofer.
This is the one I was looking at , £299.00 at Sevenoaks/ richer sounds.Bonus being if you need more bass, unlikely , you can add a subwoofer.
Like the idea that you can also connect the old sub woofer if needed.
My parents have got the DM50 and I think it is great for what it is.
As mentioned above, I'd definitely get one ahead of a cheap surround sound system for a similar price. Obviously, a more expensive surround sound system will be much better, but it isn't worth the cost/hassle for everyone.

I've got a dm50 purchased December 2014. I've been delighted with it till yesterday when it went wrong just outside its two year warranty.
Makes a loud cracking noise then cuts out. Power off for a while and it's ok. Googling this seems a frequent problem.
Great product but not if it only lasts a couple of years.

My DM75 did this last year too - it made a single popping noise whilst in used, then emitted a loud screech. Would power on, but no sound appeared. Makes a loud cracking noise then cuts out. Power off for a while and it's ok. Googling this seems a frequent problem.

Shame as it looked and sounded the part. We live in a flat, so never could play it loud without annoying neighbours, so disappointing it failed after 2 years of very mild use.
Looking to replace with an M2 Q acoustics now.
I have a Canton dm75 and really rate it but do tend to find the speech is a little dull and the more the volumes increased all the background noise is increased too.
Has anyone adjusted the settings with success?
It’s my second dm75 as the first lasted until just out of warranty and this time I took the extended 6yr guarantee from Richer Sounds fo £25.
Thanks

Bought a DM50 just over 5 years ago, love it. But it's just decided that it wants to turn itself on from standby and 'stay' on. Seems to be a common issue with this and the DM55.
Mentioned it to the missus - 'oh yes, it's been doing that for a couple of months'.
Grrrrr.
I shall probably go with a new DM60 from RS in the hope that the Germans have seen the error of their ways and fixed the issue.

I've contacted Canton and they asked me to check what firmware the DM50 is (with unit in standby, hold the mute button down for 5 secs). Mine came up D50 113.
They said that 113 is the first ever firmware version for the DM50 and that the problem is resolved in the DM60.
But no goodwill offer to get a replacement.....

I have a DM50, had it for a few years.
Sometimes you buy something and think, this is truly worth every penny of the asking price, and you add it to your great buys list.
The DM50 is one of these products. Love it. Really brings TV and film to life, lots of punch for a tiny thing. It's even been used to provide the soundtrack for a couple of parties with aplomb.
I've had no issues with mine...touch wood. If I did develop a problem, I'd go straight out and buy the newest canton equivalent.
ETA: just seen the age of the originaal post. ...

More thread resurrection here - sorry. But for phers I thought I'd add my experience.
Bought a DM50 maybe 2015-16; very rarely used due to working away. Got swept up by the good reviews.
Come to use it last year and it has destroyed itself - doesn't respond to remote, doesn't display input, and outputs no sound. Also makes loud pops and bangs.
This guy has made a thing of buying them in bulk from ebay and repairing them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fl_dwOaVlw so clearly a lot of it.
Says he rarely sees two with the same problem.
Removed the amplifier board (heatsink + two chips) from mine and it came back to life. Adding the board back returned sound and full functionality - but for a few minutes only. Youtuber has hundreds of the chips spare and implies it's nearly always a case of swapping them.
Some sort of chemical breakdown/short/cap failure/something, I suppose?
Crap for something I've barely used, though.

Apparently the problem was resolved with the 2017- on models.
My replacement DM75 from Richer Sounds has been fine since 2018, although I did buy the extended 6 year warranty for £20-25.
I did originally buy the Q2 I mention above but that sounded very, very enclosed compared to the 75, so it went back within a few days.
