Mk5 Golf GTI DSG - Pitfalls With a ~100k Example?
Discussion
As above really. I'm looking at options to replace the wife's Mini Cooper and she wants an auto. Budget circa £5k'ish and there seems to be a decent selection of what on the face of it, look to be well looked after mk5 GTIs around with the DSG gearbox (also a fair few going down to about £3k which I'm assuming will be rotters so £5k is putting me into theoretical decent example territory?).
What should I look out for? I understand these engines can sound a bit tappy (had a mk2 Octy vRS with the 2.0 TFSI engine a good few years back) - is that anything to worry about / cure? Obviously if its massively noisey I'll walk.
Anything else?
Cheers

I ran one a few years ago up to 99k miles, felt very solid and still the best all round car I've owned. The DSG 'box is generally fine as long as regular oil changes are carried out every 40k. It has the advantage over a Manual of theoretically never requiring a replacement clutch.
Engine is also pretty solid, go for the slightly newer BWA version if you can (2006 onwards). It's worth replacing the Diverter Valve, PCV and Cam Follower for a bit of preventive maintenance. These are cheap and can be done yourself, lots of articles online. Cambelt will also want changing every 4-years.
Good luck

Thanks for the advice. Had a scan through the buyers guide PH produced a couple of years back and went to look at one on Sunday. 2006, 116k miles, outside it had the odd little mark but nothing too worrying. Both wings need looking at due to the almost expected rust but I'm going to try VW and see what they say (12 year warranty apparently?) otherwise it'll be dropped off at my tame bodyshop to fix. Full heated beige leather too with just about every option ticked (apart from xenons which I thought was a bit of an odd thing to miss). Definitely needed to see the interior in real life before we made a decision but it looks great with the contrasting black carpet and trim. But the thing that sold it to us was the history - 1 owner from new who bought and had it serviced and MOTd, even wiper blades replaced at VW in Derby with the last major service being done just before Christmas.
Picked up yesterday and over the moon with it. Perfect partner for our T5 camper van and after driving a 2L camper van for 2 years and a knackered Mini for 1, jumping into a 200bhp Golf is like flying a kit to jumping in a Tornado

Are we still living in this strange '100K - OMG, it's going to snap in half' paranoia?

Go and drive some. Buy one you like. It's not hard.

Recently downsized into a 3 door Mk5 GTI DSG with 120kms (~75k miles).
Lovely car. First thing I did was book it in for an APR tune. Much better now! It is a perfect upgrade - you don't need to bother with the chassis or the intake or the exhaust - all of that is fine out of the box.
My e46 M3 wouldn't see where this thing went on a b-road - it's that composed and (now) that quick. Not as fun to drive, of course.
Just picked it up from a major service - no issues with the car despite it being used like a shopping trolley by the previous owner. Drives great and from my previous experience with another Mk5 GTI I expect it to be trouble free for another 100k.
They do drink oil - can be up to 1L per 1,000km - be warned!

Had a mk2 Octavia vRS in the past and I know that liked a drink. I'll pickup some oil to keep in the boot as I had one occasion in the middle of the Yorkshire Moors about 20 miles from anywhere when the oil light came on.Lovely car. So far, so good with the car. Off down to the Isle of Wight on Saturday in it to stretch its legs...
